Don't put a circular shaped fruit in a diagonal challenge?

For what it's worth, I much prefer the newer (lower scoring) image. I think it was just the wrong image for the challenge...

Yes. I have seen that. But I wanted more interesting reactions.

Ya, I gotta agree the moral is that Kiwis do very well in a challenge called "Fruits and Vegetables" but not so well in a challenge called "diagonal".

The biggest problem with the score, as has been pointed out is the challenge it was entered in. DPC likes the challenge topic to strike them between the eyes and a round fruit in a diagonal challenge just won't do. The same shot in a fruit challenge or green challenge or backlight, etc... might score much better.

A cross section of a Kiwi could only have been 'diagonal' in this manner.

I understand that, but the brain says "kiwi, round fruit" and the eyes see everything directed out from center which means round..... its hard to fight that subliminal message. The diagonal shots which won had strong diagonals in the image with no confusion and so score higher.

Also, remember, the mind sees what it wants to see.

I had this in the black and white and plenty of people told me that they saw brown. However, I completely desaturated it so there is nothing but black, white, and greys.

Sorry, but after importing into PS and looking at pixel values, there is brown. The saturation is reduced quite a bit, but the color information has not been fully removed.

In this case at least, my mind is seeing what there is to see.

Phew! I swore there were browns there. Especially in the lower left. I don't have CS2 on this computer so couldn't drag it in. Now I don't have to keep thinking about it...

If you open this image in Photoshop, and sample the areas that appear to have brown, you will find that there is generally more RED than Green or blue. On pure Black-Gray-White scale, R, G and B have equal values.
So, there IS brown tint in your image.

If you desaturate this image once again, you can see the difference.
