If I could write a string of curse words across the screen right now, I would. I have realized that some of the pins which connect my CF card are bent. The bottom row far right pin was bent over which I managed to get back into place, but I need help now.

Can someone look into their 5D and tell me if there is a missing pin on the bottom row in the middle? There is a missing pin on mine, but it also looks like the pin to the right of it is bent so as to fit the pin next to it. I think this is wrong, but want to make sure before I go bending new things.

Is there a missing pin on the bottom row of your 5D?
Does the pin to the left of it look somehow different than any of the other pins?

This is the worst news I've had in a long time.

Just Curious, Did you put your card in upside down by mistake?

I can tell you that on my 400D there are no pins missing. I would think the 5D or any other compact flash pins would be the same.

The good news is bent pins is a quick fix for Canon. Had a friend warn me about those when I bought my first digi so I've always been uber careful about putting cards in ... good luck with it, Jason.

no and no. no pins missing on either row and none of them look any different than the others. HTH

upon further inspection some of them seem raised up more than others. the middle pin in both rows seems taller than the others and also the the ends seems different heights than the rest but it's very subtle.

I concur with JY. The two rows of pins are offset from each other, which may give the appearance that a pin is missing from the corners on both sides, and the pin heights vary as she said. Nothing actually missing or bent, though.

Well, I see a hole when I look with a magnifying glass and light so it looks like something should be there.

Damn. I'm going to take it in today.

FWIW:

This is the lower 2/3 of the CF connector. There are no unused positions, and the pins are not offset.

Well, it's sitting in the repair shop as we speak. The damage could have been, I guess, worse. About 7 days and $130. The replacement part is only $32. The rest is labor. If it happens again, I'll be tempted to put it in myself. None of this is under warranty because I got the camera through a barter deal and don't have any receipt to say when I got it. I knew that was the risk going into the deal and am still far ahead of the retail cost even with the $130.

So, I guess I get the challenge of taking pictures with my Canon S30 3.0MP P&S.

i'm curious how this happens. the slot is keyed to prevent putting one in backwards or what not.

I have no idea. Even worse, my wife appears to be the culprit so I have even less info. I confirmed that the card only goes in one way. Maybe there is just enough wiggle room that if you slammed it in there with sufficient torque or force you can tilt the card just enough to catch a pin.

Ouch! That's gotta hurt!

I'd tell the wife she's getting new pins for xmas. :)

I would check to see if the CF card is damaged, before you put it back in the fixed camera.

Oh I feel your pain! Glad it wasn't worse and you'll have it back soon.

Actually I bet if you ask around, its more common to put your card in wrong and force it down, I broke my 300D this way, I put the card in when it was almost total darkness. I still havent fixed my cam though-

People laugh at me when I tell them I dont remove the cards on my Canon for just this reason. When my 30D was new I put a new Extreme III in it and when I traded it last week it was the first time I had taken it out. In fact when I bought my 1D I didnt have a firewire card. And I was chastised on another forum for putting a firewire reader in my pc instead of using the USB card reader I have. People tell me I'm nuts but instances like what happened to the good doctor tells me I'm mostly not. At least about this!

Let's just consider it a "Get out of Jail Free" card I'm keeping in my pocket.
