Hello,
What i'm looking for is techniques or tips on how to create a kinda dust and scratches, dirt and grain effect for shots.
I've picked some examples below, but there are plenty of other types of use of this effect that i'm after.
Difficult to describe, but a 'dirty' layer above the photo.
Any help?
Thanks alot.

start with this thread it will get you started. joeys dvd is cool but doesn't exactly show how to do the things you are talking about specificaly. my thread can get you started with brushes which is a way to do the things you are talking about. let me know if you need more help after practicing i will be more than happy to help.

this thread reminded me I shot a couple pics of my son last weekend that I had inteneded to use Joey's "amsterdam" technique on. here's a quick ten minute edit. It needs more work but I used brushes like the ones explained in the thread Elvis_L linked to.

the shot I was inspired by is titled "Amsterdam" so i was just trying to emulate that photo(s). the forground in focus then background in focus with some brushes over it thing. I just didn't know what else to call it. there's no specific thechnique really(that I know of)...just what I called it. sorry. :P

Elvis, your thread would be easier to follow if your example shots still existed :)

I've only tried a grunge look once, i just used this old piece of plexiglass and took the pictures through that. It used to be on a work bench so it's all durty and scratched up.

I bought Joey's DVD a few months ago and my 3yo daughter took it out of the dvd player to put Shrek in. Haven't seen Joey's DVD since. I don't want to shell out another $25 for another CD so does anyone have a good free instructional tutorial to do the grunge effect?

Thanks
Lisa

Still looking for help on getting the effects i wanted?
I've tried overlaying textures and lowering the opacity but it just doesn't have the same effect.

Can somebody help me? Perhaps somebody who has actually done it?

It's not just opacity - try different blending modes - overlay, soft light, hard light, etc. There are tutorials all over this place I think or just ask TG73's 3 year old daughter to loan you Joey's DVD. ;-)

I have tried the blending modes nactually with still no real luck in achieving this.
Perhaps it's just me not using the right textures or something, but for the life of me i can't get it.

I didn't go so far as an overlay, but this was done with a grunge action found here.

I think it was Ken's Grunge or something like that.

You might also look at the Urban Acid action (quite cool grundgy effect) and some of the Dragonizers.

Ben....if you are looking for some texture layers to use on your own work then just photograph textures. Whenever you are out, look around you...photograph a close up of a rough rock, the road, the dirt patch....leaves, clouds, wrinkled paper. Even try scanning some objects and then you take your chosen image into PS and copy it onto your art image as a new layer and then play with the blend modes. Then add a mask and mask out the areas you don't want that texture to be on. Now add another texture image layer and play with the blends and masks again. Then add a colour layer and again play with the blends and masks...continue in this manner until you have the desired effect.

The link below points to many available Photoshop "grunge" tools and brushes. Many of them are free:
