So I think the key to being "successful" commercially anyways is to have a good marketing plan. To participate in as many things as possible. To post to as many forums and art communities as you can (as time permits). How many communities do you belong to? I am pretty much a three-forum girl right now as it takes way too long to do it all on my crap connection. I used to be at Deviant art til someone stole a piece of pixel from me (thank god it wasn't a photo piece). I have always wondered this. I sometimes see people who are at this that or the other website and are loyal just to that one site. And then I sometimes see people at a million different sites so they can (presumably) get their name out. But how much time is it taking you? How much time to you spend marketing yourself on "art" websites. Do you do it all yourse;f or do you have others help you out?
I admit I have a lot of "time" issues with my 9-5 job and my daughter and all my obligations. Lately I have barely had time to pick up my camera let alone do something productive with it. SO I am relaly curious how the so -called "popular" people manage to handle all the time they have to put into it.

Right now I'm a member of maybe 30 forums/sites. I'm promoting my photography and my magazine. 1/3 are for my photography.

The key to marketing is to be sure you are targeting the right people.

As a photographer, it is kinda counterproductive to spend too much of your time on a site like this promoting. You're promoting to other photographers.

So, if you are a wedding photographer, you should spend your time on wedding forums, engagement forums, and others closely related.

Same if you are a music photographer...don't spend your time on DeviantArt where there are like no bands. Spend your time on sites for musicians.

Marketing yourself on art sites is not a great use of time.

I do it all myself. However, now that we have workers comp I'm bringing in about 5 interns to do this for me.

popularity doesn't determine success if you aren't popular in the right crowd.
