I just started reading up on Windows Vista. A couple questions for those in the know about Vista...

- Will there be any issues using current software with it? (Like Photoshop CS2?)

- My husband said he wants to wait a year, after its release, to get it so they work out the major bugs first. It seems like such an advance over XP that I am not sure I want to wait that long...LOL What are your thoughts?

Your husband is right... :-)

I wouldn't touch this release with a barge pole. I'm waiting until at least SP1 before looking at it. And, to be honest, I can't see that there are that many major advancements over XP that would entice me to upgrade.

It's mostly eye candy.

Your husband is right.

Here's another thought - if you can't list 5 reasons you absolutely must fork over some money to Microsoft and upgrade then don't.

yup, I'll be waiting a couple months before I even consider it too.

Also add the fact the cheapest version of Vista will be roughly $200

Damn them husbands. LOL

I will say this on that,

If you have a computer which can make use of everything this new version of Windows has I would not worry about switching over to it. Every version of windows has been an improvement over the previous version and they respond quickly to any glitches which are bound to arise when you change operation systems.

Or

Stay as far away as you can from it.

Such a predicament.

:)

Funny thing is, he knows how to fix and build computers. I still don't like listening to him ;o)

I'll upgrade to Vista when I buy a new computer that comes pre-loaded with it. I'm a firm believer that the quickest wawy to cripple a computer is to upgrade the OS past the version that came installed on it.

XP will kill a computer that was fine with 98. Vista will do the same thing for mid-range machines that are happy with XP.

Plus, I'm gonna pay for Vista when I upgrade computers anyway, might as well only spend the money once.

I'd only install Vista as a clean installation, not an upgrade over XP.
Your machine better have something like 4 Gig RAM and a kickass videocard, it's going to need it.
All those machines now sold with 1 and 2 gig RAM and Vista ready labels are like the 256meg machines that were first sold as XP ready (=horribly slow).

I'll be running XP on my own machines for a long time to come.
Don't need all the fancy new Vista gimmicks.

So, sounds like it is best to just let my current computer expire and by then the new machines will all have Vista. This computer better last me another year or two then ;o)

I hear Linux is FREE!

Photoshop CS2 has passed compatibility testing. However, Photoshop Elements has some quirks. It works, but with some nuances.

Also be aware the RAW Image Thumbnailer is not shipping with the initial Vista release. However, from what I understand (and this could all change) but it is being worked on by the major camera manufacturers in this space. They're working with their vendors (the ones who actually wrote their RAW implementation) and should have something ready around CYQ1, just after the Vista consumer launch.

I'll probably upgrade when it comes out, but that's cuz I can get it for $20. One perk from having family members working for the evil empire. My dad does say it is a resource hog (at least RC1), so I wouldn't be running it on a medium to low end machine.

I've been running RC1 for a little while... it is a resource hog... but you can turn most of the eye candy off... the major benefits I've noticed are the GUI being rendered in Direct-X, preventing those nasty hangs and horrible white boxes all over the screen when a program is sucking resources or has crashed when using GDI...

Otherwise I haven't seen any huge advancements... the device database is bigger again tho...

definately hold off...

i have been running the beta now for ages and it is great i would not go back to XP for nothing, very stable and looks good.

I've been running RC1 since its release. Photoshop CS2, and every other piece of software I need, runs flawlessly. The OS does as well. I predict that every Windows XP user will be using it within a year, and probably a lot sooner than that, grumblings notwithstanding. As Paul Thurrott says, "Let's face facts: Not ever upgrading isn't really an option."

If Adobe would do an official Linux release of Photoshop (ie no effin' with Wine) I'd be there.

I never could get CS2 to run under Linux, although PS7 ran flawlessly.

There's a mod for gimp which undoes the stupidness and makes it look exactly like photoshop. Plugins for gimp to read all the various raw formats as well.

Here's my obligatory pimp: freebsd.org

Don't get me wrong, GIMP is a great program and I highly reccomend it to new amateurs, but DNMC yet for bulk professional work.

Gimp is a piece of crap, was just throwing it out there.

Photoshop gives me an excuse to make sure my windows machine still powers on once in a while.

That said, the days of dealing with WINE are an unpleasant memory. Go to vmware.com and get the free vmware player. Get someone to make you a windows xp vmware image and then load it into the player on your linux box. Fully functional windows, no crippled WINE bs.

Alternatively, browse the torrents and steal a copy of vmware workstation and then you can do it all yourself. Of course stealing is bad, so you won't go to heaven if you choose this option...

I have been running it for quite a long time. The only software that I found not to work with it that I had installed was an old version of easy cd creator and a few other things that I had long since forgotten about. Photoshop works fine on it. My Wacom tablet works fine as well.
If I were just starting out, I probably would buy a new pc that came with it installed. New machines that can run Vista will have a logo that say "Vista Capable." For the best expierience I would stear clear of those and go for ones that have the lable "Vista Premium Ready."
