Now that the free study challenge is over I can finally put up a direct link to my pbase galleries of my visit to St. Petersburg a month ago.
Just like in 2003 the city was beautiful, altough the weather was utter crap this time.
The city changes so rapidly now, investments are up; leading to better roads, more modern shops, pretty girls in Dolce and Gabbana, etc.
Not everyone benefits though; The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. When you walk in the streets away from the main touristic or commercial sites and go into the inner squares etc you see the conditions most people live in. It has its charms, but that's when you understand why some of the literal people say that it is a dual faced city. Pretty facades, but behind the facade the building is kept together with tape.
Anyway, it was cool to be there again. It sure will not be the last time. I wanted to wander around on the streers more in the morning and evening, but it rained a lot. :(

Editing is ready 33% I guess, it goes slow. So when you are interested revisit the page a couple of times the coming weeks.

Love to hear what you think and if you have any questions about the city, ask them. :)

And this was my Free Study entry. It did very well, thanks!

I was born and grew up in St.Petersburg. To me, the most photographically interesting opportunities in that city are in its numerous little "yards" in the older quarters. It's actually quite a phenomenon - dozens of little passages interconnecting dozens of little scrubby yards. And then, of course, there is the water, lots of it.

I tried to quickly pick and choose around several Russian photo sights to show you what I mean; not the best selection, I'm sure. Your pictures show the tourist's view, but it takes knowing the city to develop the feel for its mood (and St.Petersburg is *very* moody behind its beautiful facades).

Arcady,

I know exactly what you mean with the little yards. Because I had a program to follow I only had time for that in the morning and in the evening. It was essentialy one of the things that had a high priority during this trip. Only on the first morning, when I started to explore the streets for the first time, the weather was good. All the other mornings were crap, because of the rain. And after dark you won't find me in those little yards, because I do not speak a word Russian. :)

So I guess I have to go back again. Sounds good. ;)
Now, after two visits, I feel I know the city well enough to go there on my own, unguided. Wintertime is also great I think. Maybe next year, because the travel company heard via the guide that I had taken a lot of pictures. They offered me a huge discount when they could use some in their travel guide next year.

Thanks for your comment and examples, I like most of those a lot.

Yeah, rain is the usual weather in St.Petersburg. Good luck with your next visit! I want to go back there soon, too.

Great pics. High standard of work. Thanks for showing.

You should start getting reduced rates from Pbase too, as you've inspired (?) me to put some of my Florentine snaps up.

One day I'll join you in St. Petersburg. Maybe during the summer. Can't wait to see the city where I grew up.

Nick
