your flash will be colored.

Depends on your WB to a degree too.
You can gel your flash to color balance it to the room light, or use colored gels on it to color the scene - one neat thing is to set the camera up at night in lets say a graveyard, on a long exposure and then use the flash off the camera with differenc colors to highight different gravestones in different colors.

in the studio it can be done for some artistict effect, but often the background flash is gelled to change the color of the background easily.

I recently recieved a bunch of gels from roco a link i found off of a thread here. I was looking to use them in a creative way. they are really small samples so i thought i could put them over my flash.

The effect will depend on what gel you use and where you aim the flash. You could use it to color a backdrop (any backdrop can be colorized with a gel-covered strobe/flash). You could use it to add a funky look to a portrait (all red tones for example). Play around with them, off-camera if you can..... experiment and you'll see that there are many possibilities.

There is a section on gels in the portrait lighting learning thread.

hint...use a black background for best color background light effects.

seems contrary to how it would work best - but good advice.

yes, you are right...it does seem counterintuitive. However, after getting a set of color gels for my Sunpack622 several years ago, I struggled mightily to try to get a good color background spot. The black background was the answer. It works great!

One interesting effect I've seen (and its quite difficult to master) is to use your coloured gel over your flash and also use a colour filter on your camera. If you use a green filter on camera, and a magenta filter on your flash, the two counter-act each other and whatever your flash is hitting will be exposed with no colour cast, but your background will come out green.

I dunno if I've described that correctly.. its a bit more technical but I've seen it used in fashion photography and love the effect!

Out of interest, do you still have the link to get the gels? I only have huuuuuge ones!

Another suggestion I've heard is to hit, for example, a blue background with a blue gel'ed light.

This lets you get even deeper colours than are possible with just a straight light on a coloured background.

I think the thing to do was email them and ask for a fen deck with all of the samples they have avilable and tell them you plan on purchasing after veiw what they have available.

a neutral grey BG will work with the colored filters well also.
