A friend of mine asked today if the lenses she has for a 35mm Canon were usable on a Canon Digital SLR. All you Canon users can chime in with a good answer please! Thanks!

Depends.
EF mount lenses can be used on SLRs.
Older canon lenses (FD) don't work unless you get an adaptor - which isn't really worthwhile unless the lens is very good (read expensive)

The older Canon EF lenses do not work on the new Canon digital SLR (E10D).
I have older lenses that I used on my Canon EOS 650 (Film SLR) that I was hoping to use and they do not work on my new Canon EOS 10D.

Hadn't heard that. Canon seem to disagree in their 10D documentation that says that 'All Canon lenses in extensive EF line-up, ..., are fully compatible with the EOS 10D'

Are you sure about that? I have one of the oldest EF-mount-designed lenses, a 28 F2.8, and it works just fine. Might there be a problem with your particular lenses?

I keep getting an error message when I try to use both of my old lenses?

What sort of error message? Which lenses?

I've read about an 'Error 99' message people were having using older lenses. First off make sure that the electrical contacts on the lens mount are clean. |

I tried cleaning the electrical contacts and:
The small 28-80mm lens does not work most of the time.
The large 75-300mm works pretty good until you try to use it in a high lighting condition.

Well rest assured that it's a problem with your lenses in particular, and not with older EF mount lenses not being compatible. It might be worth it to take them in to get serviced. |

I hardly think it is the lenses. One lens maybe but not two. They are in perfect order and have been stored in cases and a camera bag.
And the local dealer warned me that they probably would not work because he ran into the same problem himself and with the local pros he sells to.
I have also read others here say they had the same problem.
