The only reason I question the legitimacy of this request is it starts Greetings from Dubai...which we all know is full of Millionaires who want to share their fortunes with you! Oh, wait, that is actually Zimbabwi or something like that? Anyway, I received this request to use my photo in an upcoming calendar. I am actually VERY familiar with the company having worked in purchasing for several Veternary offices! I just wonder how legitimate or how serious I should take the request. I guess if they are willing to give me a phone number to contact them, I have nothing to fear? Better question yet...anyone else happen to receive this exact same request for an image at betterphoto.com?

Greetings from Dubai!

Thanking you and we look forward to receive your reply soon.

With best regards,

You need to find out what they are going to use it for, how many copies, etc., then determine a price (since you apparently don't have an agent to represent you!) to license the image for that specific use.

The typical rate to use a photo on a promotional calendar is probably in the low hundreds of dollars, assuming they are printing fewer than 50,000 copies or so; check the prices for a similar image and use at a Rights-Managed stock site like Alamy, Corbis, or Getty.

Register the copyright, and negotiate a credit and samples for yourself if you can.

Google pops up with a real company, but I'm not sure why they sent you to the Japanese page.... (which is also real)

Here's a list of locations for the company. Sorry. I didn't see one listed for Dubai.

PS. In these kind of scams, they end up asking for your personal info so they can deposit your check. Like ss#, telephone, bank inf and stuff. You might want to be careful.

It honestly sounds legit to me. I've dealt with numerous overseas companies who have used my photos for various purposes, so I've seen a number of requests come through. And I've seen tons of scams. The fact that these guys are quoting a specific image (as opposed to sending a generic spam letter) and have a reasonable-sounding use for it, I would strongly suspect that this is on the up-and-up. Good luck!

Sorry, I meant to at least share the image so you would have an idea of what they wanted to work with. Thank you for your responses. You have actually given me many questions to ask them about the printing and such, and I was not so sure I should even ask to be paid for something like this. My sister-in-law is a producer for still photography shoots for advertisements so I will surely be seeking her advise. I was just joking with her last week about how she was going to have to act as my agent. Then this comes along! Thank you again, sincerely, for your responses!

When you get paid then send them the photo and releases as agreed. There are a lot of these type of requests at BetterPhotos in the past which were fake. Good luck,

Wow, you all are making some very good points! I can't help but be somewhat skeptical I think. This kind of thing doesn't happen to me! LOL I have responded to the email to express in interest in working with them and asking the very basic questions. Your insights are great!! Thanks!

UPDATE!! Here is the latest on the request I received to use one of my photos. I had not heard from them since their original email, so I sent a follow up response to them to ensure they had received my expressed interest in working with them.

It looks like only about 800 calendars to be printed with the option to use the photo in a health magazine advertisement (is that cool or what?). Anyway, they have picked out 15 photos, but plan only to use 12 of course in the calendar. She also mentioned she would be putting their advertising agent in touch with me soon. So in all, things still looking good.

All of your insights, links etc have been most helpful in my research! THANK YOU!!
