I did search for this and didn't find any area (here or on the web) that could answer my question:

I just realized why some of my pictures have been fuzzy depsite having the center circle directly at my target: My lens is focusing using the right right rectangle and not the center circle. I can see that is "bold" compared to the other three. Example: I'm taking a picture of my wife. She is 5 feet away with a distant background. I zoom in so her head fills the center circle. I try to focus and zooms near and far causing me to manaully adjust the lens.
I am using the kit lens.

So, how can I change this? What setting did I change??

change the focus selection using the same controls that you use to navigate the menu - you might have it locked though - in which case you unlock it with the sliding switch below

The focus is locked. Look for the "L" and "." switch, move it to ".", depress the shutter partially to activate the autofocus, use the selector to move the focus point, and lastly R.T.F.M.

I've been there....its really easy for it to switch over if you push the control accidentally.

I thought I'd be stuck a world of "rule of thirds"!

Ugg, I was shooting the other day and I know how to select the focus area but it was not working and I could not figure it out. I had forgotten about the lock switch. Thanks fore the question and the answers.

That's funny! I thought the same thing a while back when the focus got stuck somewhere not in the middle, and I had forgotten how to change it. :)
