I'm curious for an upcoming challenge and I know that there's a rule about not showing art (even if it's your own) but I know others have done it w/out being DQed.

Not sure if I has seen that answered really - I once saw a picture with a twig in front be allowed, so I don't know how to answer.

If it's being used as a background to a 3D object, it is legal.

Literal Artwork Rule Tutorial... from the "Learn" Section. Lots of good stuff there. :)

I think the rule goes something along these lines, but I am sure someone on SC will answer. You can use photos as a background as long as there is something 3 dimensional in the photo as well. well fotoman beat me to it. You can also look in the tutorials for an explanation of the artwork rule.
EDIT: Wow I am really slow today...

I believe the general idea is to keep people from simply reproducing an existing image with the camera. You can use artwork as part of a larger composition as long as you do something obvious in the capture that makes the photograph something more than just artwork. If the viewers have only the artwork to react to, then it will probably be DQ'd. If you have any doubts, you should run it by the SC for an opinion.

FWIW, we're actively discussing ways to clarify this rule.
