i have a friend that needs help with this question, and i don't have the answer for him, so i am asking the great people of DPC to see if anyone out there can help us with this problem. ok he is shooting right now, and it's saving straight to the memory card, but he wants to hook it up to his laptop and just have it save straight to the computer. he's using a Pentax IST DL with his new dell laptop. is there a program that he should buy that will help him do this? or is there some way to just set his computer up to do this for him? thanks for any input

Most dSLR cameras come with some sort of software to allow this. 3rd-party software might not be able to do that with every camera easily. Tell him to check if his camera came with such a software, or if such a software is available from the manufacturers.

It's called "shooting tethered" if you want to search around for info via google...

I'm not sure about the Pentax, but it may come with a program similar to Canon's Remote Capture or Nikon's Nikon Capture. I've used remote Capture for some of my more challenging shots where I needed a large review screen (since my eyeballs aren't all that good).

One thing he should know (if the software is available) is that the transfer via USB is going to be slower than direct write to a in-camera memory card.
