I am new to this site and I have a question. There are alot of beautiful pictures collected onto this site. I enjoy Photoshopping as a hobby and sometimes participate in Photoshop competitions. In general, how do the participants of this site feel about their images being used? Or is this addressed in individual bios? If I were to use an image, I would definitely reference the person responsible for the original image and can link source. Your thoughts please?

All the images here are © of the photographers. Permissions is required before use.

I recently put together a booklet for a childrens photography class using photos from this site as examples of basic phtotgraphy techniques. I asked permission of each photographer before using his/her photo and placed a very prominate copywrite below the photo. I think most of us would be pleased to have our photos used, but we would want to be asked. I would hope no one would assume anything.

I guess I knew one person on this site would feel like this.

youre taking a picture and putting it in peoples vision. its not like you can stop them from doing something with it. when youre dying in prison, thinking about all the things youve done wrong, prosecuting that guy who put your picture on his website isnt one of them.

the only problem i would have is if somewhere were making profit from my picture.

I feel the same way clay but there's the rub, if you let even the non-profit slide you'll have a hard time enforcing the money ones.

Suppose you have a particular political belief and some facist from a political group uses your image as part of a propoganda piece, no money is being made, they are just goofing around but you want to nail the sucker none the less. :-)

I just tell Sadam's people to talk to my people and we'll do lunch.

Back to the original question, I can't understand why anyone would want to use someone else's work. Even if you make something better in photoshop it's still not your work being displayed. My feelings are take inspiration from your fellow photographers and go shoot your own versions.

Actually, I understand what this guy is driving at. Some folks are more graphic design oriented than photography oriented.

I am sorta the same way. I like manipulating images and most of my photography over the years has been in support of some article, painting or information piece rather than just for the photography. Photography is just one source of images and there are lots of folks who just like the art of graphic design.

Photoshop and other graphic design is a whole other genre of art seperate from photography art.

Did you get that from that movie "How To Kill Your Neighbors Dog" by Kenneth Brannagh.

Or was this just a general urge :-)

Legally you have to have permission to use any copyright images, and the competition rules probably require it. Most people would probably be happy to let you use their images, but you should ask first. Also, that permission is typically only granted for a specific purpose, rather than anything you feel like doing.

I've had people ask to use my pictures and I've been happy to let them. I would be less thrilled if I found out someone had just stolen them.

I think it would be to your benefit to ask the photographer for permission. Sure, there's the legal aspect, but also the photographer would probably be willing to send you the original fullsize photo. That way you wouldn't have to work with a 640x480 image - I think most of us save our full 1600x1200 (or whatever) images, and that would give you more to work with in Photoshop.

Thanks all. If there are more of you with opinions, keep them coming. There seems to be a consensus of willingness with permission. To respond to ShortRedneck's post. Much of what I do combines images or uses portions of images to build something different. Sometimes I may use bits and pieces from 5 - 10 different images to complete one thing that I may be working on. Example: Perhaps I've done my focal point of the image I'm working on and need a good background? I don't see anything wrong with appreciating and using images that other people have done as long as they don't mind. Much of what I do is silly, and sometimes from more of an artistic form. But the images get some good exposure as well. I don't stand to make a dime off of images. But if I were the type to just take people's work, I wouldn't have bothered asking in this forum.

But I will most certainly ask before sampling anybody's work. If there are individuals from this site that are willing to offer a sort of mutually respectful permission for me to use their work, you can email me directly at dkurschner@mn.rr.com. Otherwise, I'll enjoy browsing your groups pictures and maybe even submit some of my own as I just recently purchased a Canon Powershot S30. Thx again

Cool. I'd like to see some of your work sometime.
