...to sort based on subject? Like taking all the shots of babies, cats, dogs and rusted out old vehicles from "At Rest" and give them all "TOO PREDICTABLE" scores?

:)

Ummm, I don't know about your request, but isn't this about the quality of the picture? I know it's hard to look at the same thing over and over, but try taking a break. We'll be here later.

heh its amazing how many people complain about people taking photos of a few specific things .. but dont make posts to their image making a suggestion of something else they could try ... esp from someone who hasn't even submitted a pic to a contest according to their profile.

Oh I don't know about that, some of them are really quite good if you take the time to look at them.

And to me, this was a chance for many members or registered users to actually enter their first challenge. They shot what they knew or put in what they had available. It's a great learning experience, I know I've learned TONS in the short time I've been here.

There are a couple of the baby, cat, dog shots that are in my top scoring positions

I should have phased the humor part of my question differently. I didn't mean I wanted to score them low because of the predictable content, it's that that's the comment that fits them all.

A baby is my 2nd favorite and a pet is my 4th favorite. However, of the bottom 50 or so, probably 30 are pets or babies.

esp from someone who hasn't even submitted a pic to a contest according to their profile.

Ah, attack the messenger. :) Yes, I have an empty profile. I was under the mistaken impression that I didn't have to submit in order to rate. I apologize if I got that wrong.

What they knew is great. What they had available I'm curious about. Several of them felt like "Well, I can't think of anything and my neighbor's cat is asleep on a bench so I'll submit that." Does that happen a lot? There are almost 300 images, do people really submit things for the sake of submitting frequently?

So, they shot the neighbor's cat or whatever? Is that an issue? The real question is: did they make a good image or not? and not: Did they spend a lot of time doing it?

I can't speak for others, but I don't submit to a challenge unless I feel like I have something worth looking at and I want feedback/comments on. I would imagine that everyone else is looking for feedback too, good or bad. To categorize pictures by subject and dump on them collectively, seems contrary to the purpose of the challenges.

hehe i always shoot the messanger then ask questions later...

an idea .. how about offering other options as your submissions?... let others see different ideas... some people that are on here .. i have already decided .. that their cat or their kid is all they see all day long ... it might also be the most important thing in their life so they want to share it with others...

all of my photo's are just what i shoot .. if it is in front of me and catches my eye i take a photo of it .. if there happens to be a contest that week that a photo would fit in great! .. if not oh well ... i dont go out looking for something to shoot for the contests... :)

if i understand what you are saying, maybe there should be a keyword(s) entered for each photo .. so the contest entries can be sorted by those keywords ? ...

I swear I'm going to get around to it! I swear!

My idea for this one was "An object at rest will stay at rest" but couldn't come up with a visual for that. The best I thought of was a golfball up close with the shadow of someone about to hit it with a ball in the background. Alas, I didn't have time to borrow golfclubs from someone. :)

Well, my point was just poking humor that out of 293 entries, 289 are cats. Ok, slight exaggeration.

But keywords might be cool. Another thought that just jumped into my bizarre brain... Self-rating. You guess what your final score will be and the person the closest to being correct wins a black ribbon or something similar. :) Guess 2.983 and it's 2.984, then you win!

So, they shot the neighbor's cat or whatever? Is that an issue? The real question is: did they make a good image or not? and not: Did they spend a lot of time doing it?

Three questions.

1) Is it ok if they shoot the neighbor's cat? I suppose if the cat is digging in the garden or giving some other reason to be executed, then sure.

2) Is it an issue that they shoot something "just to enter"? Yeah, to me it is. Photography to me is all about expressing an idea/thought/emotion. Taking pictures for the same of submitting isn't expressing anything to me. If you take a picture of a pet for "At Rest" that evokes strong emotions or expresses an idea, then I'll rate that one high. If you take a picture of a pet you love very much, but it looks just like millions of snapshots of pets seen everywhere all the time, then it's not expressing anything to me. Does that make sense?

3) Did they spend a lot of time...? I don't care how long it takes. Sometimes I see something and it takes 30 seconds for me to get the full context of what I want to shoot. Some times it takes weeks to come up with a final plan. Time from conception to completion is irrelevant. But... If the only thought was "hey, that's "at rest"", then see my point for #2.

I agree it does get a little boring to see too many of the same subject in challenges, and that your post is just poking a little fun at it... Nothing wrong with that.

We have to expect that I guess, people are learning here and some are not as creative as others (me included) so until we can all break free of that somehow, we'll probably keep seeing "boring" pictures from time to time. The best thing to do is when you see one that is boring or repetitive, etc., leave them a comment saying "maybe if you added this to the shot, or did this instead of that it would be better...". With that feedback users will get the idea and learn, and maybe next time remember your comments and enter a better picture. :)

I'm just about done voting on the At Rest challenge and I agree that it can be a little difficult to look through many similar shots. But, within all of those simlar shots there are some that really stand out. Taking the time to understand why some cat photos are so much better than the others can be very educational.

sure its okay to shoot your neighbor's cat .. just make sure you do it from public property that way they can't comment on invasion of privacy ;)

yeah i know what you are saying, thats about the same reason why i shoot what i shoot when i shoot it ...
