Any opinions or experience of the following 4 laptop models? - I'm looking for a Windows laptop for dev work, web design, photoshop - I have the PC at home for the serious stuff, but I'm going to be travelling to an office for a few months and need a laptop.

Oh, and I'm trying to avoid Dell.... :) |

I can tell you my thoughts on Acer. I also have a travel mate 4101WLMi, with pretty similar characterisitcs. Except mine is a pentium M 1,6 GHz everything else the same. I'm very satisfied with the performance. You can do everything you need conected to web and multimedia work. The thing I'm not satisfied with- it's not very robust. It should be since it's a "TRAVEL MATE". My cd drive got screwed up when I was carrying it around(physicaly damaged, can't open the cd-door anymore). After just 6 months of usage. That was the 5th time I took it outside the house. On the other hand, battery is very good.
I have a widescreen model and am pretty satisfied with the screen. Very nice one. If you're not planning to bring it around too much then it would be a good choice for multimedia business.

The company I work for summers and holidays uses Fujitsu laptops, and I've little good to say about them. They seem to be underpowered and prone to issues. And for the high cost, I just don't think they're worth it.

Thanks for the replies.
Well, that's two different places I've read about problems with the build quality on the Acer, so that's that one off the list. Since I'll be taking it in the car every day I'll want something with decent build quality.
Also, thanks for the advice on the Fujitsu. Helps narrow it down. It's great hearing opinions from people who have actually used these laptops! |

I know it is not what you are asking for, but I have two Toshiba laptops. My only complaint is the damn things wont die so I can upgrade!

What model Fujitsu LT were they using?
I work for a sister company of Fujitsu PC (we are all part of FAI under FJ Ltd.) we have all Fujitsu Laptops and the current S and E series kick butt.
I will say that if you asked me 3 or 4 years ago about FJ laptops I would have steered you clear of them. I had to repair them all the time back then...but they did some house cleaning up there in the Bay Area and turned the product and branch around in a short period of time. Also, if you do have to call their helpdesk they are way better than any of the others.
I can't really comment on the Amilo Pro model (as I haven't seen one) that jhonan mentioned, as that is actually a European Model produced by Fujitsu-Siemens out of Germany... (Same place all my rack mount servers come from)...

I have an Acer Aspire 3610. 15.4", 512MB, 1.5Ghz. I have taken it with me on 4 airline trips (always carried on) and have yet to have a single problem with anything breaking, viruses (I'm anal since getting a virus on another laptop), etc. Nice screen, but as with any laptop/pc, if it's not calibrated right, doesnt matter what kind you have.
Added: 40GB HD, I have an external where I transfer all my photos.

Okay, I've put the ACER Aspire 3661WLMi on the list. Perhaps the build issues are just with the Travelmates?
I'll also give the local PC supplier a call in the morning and see if he has any opinions. He's normally upfront about these things, without being too worried about his margins :) |
