HI Folks - how would you rate this //www.tariquesani.net/displayimage.php?pos=-58 as an example of Low Key photography?

Tarique,

I put a reply on your website, but I got 'Critical Error while processing'. I don't think that the comment went through. If it didn't, I'll comment again.

Yes and no. I would say it's more of a high-contrast photo, because the highlights are so bright.

What do you mean exactly by "Low Key".

It comes across rather harsh. I think the dragon needs to be raised up off the backdrop material to try and blur it out more. Maybe place the dragon on a box covered with the black material or etc. and as far away from the background as possible. Maybe adjust the light more to the front for softer more even light distribution.

Just mt 2 cents;

Calvus

I would call this one 'high contrast' rather than low key. I think (and i could be wrong) that low key photos generally don't have much data on the highlight side of the histogram...

i would try shooting it from a different angle ..

Thanks everyone - I was indeed wrong - this is high contrast rather than Low key - as John put it this has most of the data on the Highlight side of the histogram....

" Low Key - Contains tones ranging from 18% grey to black - Often conveys a more serious, formal, dignified mood. - Mostly used to show the character, or personality of the model by emphasizing shape, texture, and making use of "mood" lighting. - Good low key maintains detail in the blackest shadow area. - Lighting requires more side and back lighting, to produce large shadow areas. - Makes good use of gobos, barn doors, or other light focusing devises. - Careful use of fill lights is necessary to maintain low-key mood while filling the shadows just enough to give detail.
