I would like to share a revalation I have had while being on this site. It doesn't matter what you photograph, or what others think of it, it is only how YOU percieve the world within your surroundings. I have posted many things, asked for oppinions, and shared some of what I thought were halfway descent photos. I am only looking to better myself as a photographer. However, even though I ask for oppinions, is there a reason to tear the person apart? Sometimes I feel that alot of you, and I don't mean everybody, feel it important to just hammer the person. To belittle and critisize. I do not mind constructive critism, but hurtful belittling is totaly uncalled for. I have done nothing to invoke such treatment, at least to my knowledge.
Also, I post topics to the forum for others to give me thier oppinion but it really isn't going to help if nobody even replies. I do not think any of you really know just how hurtful it is to have a bunch of reads but no replies. It makes one feel unwanted or not good enough to warrent comments.
Please do not think I am bitching or whining even thought it does sound like it. I am only stating something that I would have thought obvious. I know there are others on this site that feel this way, as you can tell by looking at all the postings that have very few, if any, relpies.
I try to reply to those posts I may have something in which to contribute. However, I am only a beginner, and I know nothing. I do know that I have sent Kudos to those individuals whom I think did something extremly well through Private Messages. In my oppinion, it helps boost the spirits of those of us who are beginning.
Anyway, this is my tirade...I hope I have not offended anyone, but mearly open thier eyes to what certain behaviours can do.
I do love it here...you can ask questions, enter contests and see what other photographers (both really good and really not so good) are doing. There are representations of all types and styles of photos here...one of the only boards I like that does such. However, in my case, I do not shoot and edit like some of the others in here....I have mine own unique style and I like it....I find it unfortunate that people come here to learn, enter, grow as photographers but get put down, ridiculed, critisized and ignored.
Thank you for your time.

you're always going to find people that go beyond constructive criticism, and there have even been just flat out unjustified and innappropriate posts on people's images. i think the message that should be given is to seriously think about the purpose of the site before making a comment, especially on someone's image. If the comment is not productive, dont post it. Overall, i agree with you, Dawn, and it is nice to hear someone speak out about ways to make the site better.

hiya,

it's too bad you feel this way, it's never nice to feel that people are purposefully being hurtful.

curious, i went through your comments section, to see what people had said. on the whole, i find the comments to be good, constructive criticism. sometimes, it's pretty scary putting a piece of artwork out there, as it's so much a part of you. in a way, that's where people who have been to art college have an advantage on a site like this. not in skils or talent, we all know how many wonderful photographers (probably the majority here) did not go to art college. but, it does teach you how to survive, and use a crit. listen, be objective, decide if the crit is valid. if it is, use it, if it isn't, ignore it. don't take it personally. that way madness lies.

you have some good work in your portfolio. keep shooting. only with practice does one improve. (i've been serious about photography for 20 years, and i learn new stuff every day...)

First off, I am no expert. You can discard everything I say. I still have a LOT to learn myself. I just try to pass along any advice I have gotten to help me.
I, like xianart, went through the comments in your portfolio and really don't see any comments 'tearing you apart'. You have some good people giving some good criticsm, read what they said and try to apply it. It's easy to post a bad shot and expect harsh crticsm. What's NOT easy is to post what you think is a good shot and get criticism on what's wrong with it.
So, you have 2 choices:
1. Don't upload any shots to your portfolio.
2. Upload, take your criticism and apply what others say to your next shot.
I put your shots in upload order and your shots have gotten better
2 things I see you need to do:
1. Don't take shots that are to far for your lens. I'm not sure how far an effective range for 80mm is, but you won't get the details you should in, let's say, an airplane flying by.
2. TRY shooting some shots in RAW. You have some nice shots that would look so much better had the highlights not been so bright. You can compensate a for that a little in RAW.

OK..I am sorry you guys...the critism happened as private messages and in my email...the comments posted here are not the comments of which I was reffering. I appologize as when I re-read the posting, realized I had not clearified where those comments were.

If you receive inappropriate messages through pm/email you should report this to the site council.

No, not at all.

I'd like to add sometimes I read a thread post and don't know how to give a good answer, even if I know what is being asked. Sometimes if I see the thread falling out of site, I'll give a bump, trying to get answers for the poster.

In that, don't feel bad about bumping a thread if you aren't getting answers. Those that know how to answer might not have seen it.

If I got a PM like the one Dawn says she got, I would look at who sent it 1st. Leroy, if you sent me a PM and I thought it was offensive, chances are I just misinterpreted it. That goes for most of the users on here.

Yeah, I know I'm pretty easy to misinterpret at times :-)

I would also like to add a bit of advice that applies to life in general, not just on this site:

Don't take it personally.

When people say mean things, it's usually because they feel threatened, jealous, fearful or just plain crabby and want to take it out on someone. It's not about you.

I was reading a certain photographer's comments the other day on this site and in my opinion, he was arrogant, rude and just plain mean. There is no cause for that. I interpreted it as him feeling insecure in his own work (he had not won any ribbons) and that he was trying to overcompensate by acting like he knew more about photography than anyone here and that no one was 'smart enough' to see the professional quality of his work. His whole persona oozes fear and insecurity.

Remember that when someone is just plain mean. When they are critical in a constructive way, digest their remarks, and learn from them, but don't take it as a beat down. It's really a help up, if you will.

Yes, this is a contest, but it doesn't have to be like those silly reality shows where people are pitting people against each other.

Have faith in yourself and your art. Take what you need from the feedback and don't dwell on the pish posh... it's tiny and if you let it affect you, you are letting it take your power. Hold onto your power. It will help you grow stronger as an artist. Confidence (but not over-confidence) is one of the most attractive qualities about an artist.

So is everyone :-)

Sometimes your in a hurry, or something comes up, and don't realize that what you said could be interpreted differently than what you mean (even if you do spell all the words correctly :-) It may be a good answer, but brusque.

Some people have great ability, like Dr. House (on the tv show "House") and just about the same personality as House.

Some people don't speak English well, and sometimes this is misinterpreted.

And some people try to be funny, but don't use smileys.
This can make a difference ;-)

For all these people, you have to read the comment twice and ask if it could be interpreted in a more positive way, or if the person was trying to be helpful but wasn't well-spoken. (or is that well-written? :-)

I'm not a fan of most jetplane shots, but your other two challenge entries were way underscored. I will make no excuses for this site, but one thing you can do is just try to build a network of people who like your stuff. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for you in future challenges.

I want to personally thank each and every one of you who have answered this posting. I know that there will always be those who have to feel better about themselves by making everyone else feel badly. The comments that all of you have posted here and about my photos have been really appreciated and alot of my growth has been from attempting to employ them in shooting. I do have a tendancy, being a red head, to just go off, however, this was not the case. I will tell you that the comment was basically stop shooting, and sell the camera. I find this totally well....anyway, this is a thank you for all your kind words and very helpful critisms. And THANKS for the Kudos on my profile pic...I was going to enter it into the Gary Larson contest but just missed the deadline....THANKS ALL YOU GUYS!!!!!!!
here it is in case you missed it.
