So what's it all about anyway?
Is it about art and photography or how to follow the rules? Or about how to cheat and bend the rules and manipulate the system? An interactive web version of CSI for the SC to play with?

So, what's DPC all about anyway? Recently it seems more like CSI for the SC to play with, contantly investigating errors, ommissions, blatant cheating and manipulation. Or is it a lesson in how to read and follow the rules?

I thought it was about photography.

I think it's about photography but also about "WOW"ing people for the best score. and sometimes to create something that "PoP's" you need to bend the rules. hopefully just enough but sometimes you bend too far I guess. I was worried about my ribbon shot being validated because of my use of blur. I wasnt trying to cheat(blur is legal but how much is sooo subjective you never really know) just trying to make an appealing image that i hoped was within the rules. turned out it was ok. never would have known without trying. even when you ask an sc member your getting just a small piece of the answer. does that make sense?

According to Agassi, image is everything.

It's all of those things - and none of them. Everyone comes to DPC with a slightly different goal, perspective, or spin. We all make it what we want it to be. If it works for us, we stay, if it doesn't, we leave.

I'm still here.

I've never engaged in ANY competitive endeavor that "qualifies" output via adherence to rules that did NOT include an element of "pushing the envelope". Our rules are not (and cannot be) precise enough to cover all possible eventualities. Part of the fun in doing these challenges, for me, is trying to find "legal" ways to accomplish my goals, and so far I've succeeded in never being DQ'd on image-manipulation legality, but I accept that it could happen some day, and I'm fine with that. I don't think of people who cross the line as they push the envelope as being "cheaters" at all; for me they're explorers, people trying something different or more risky. I have no problem with it.

Multiple accounts, blatant attempts to use illegal editing and hope nobody notices, stuff like that, is a whole other story, but not many people actually do that as far as I can see. Regarding increased SC workload/visibility, it seems to me that's a natural offshoot of a rapidly growing user base.
