I just signed up for a SmugMug account. I am still on the 14 day trial. It appears that the site is really, really slow. I started an update to setup some custom prices, and I wrote this entire messand and it's still now updated.
What other competitors are out there? I looked at PrintRoom and SmugMug. I really need a full service storage, ordering, printing and delivery service. I don't want to have to order for my clients.
I need customization abilities, a real hostname, control of multiple levels of pricing, a wide variety of quality print sizes and speed.
What are you guys using? I am getting sick of looking, but I don't know if I could settle for SmugMug.
Plus, I noticed something confusing on the Cart Checkout of SmugMug. It's too easy for a novice user to go to the SmugMug homepage, and get lost trying to get back. You would think that "home" would be my main page and not SmugMugs. (Plus the link at the bottom of the footer.) I don't care if they 'brand' my site, but they make it too easy for someone to get lost.

I really haven't had issues (yet) with SmugMug being slow.
You should send your suggestions to them about the checkout page. They are very receptive. |

Send a message to help@smugmug.com. Those guys are so response it makes me wonder if they ever sleep.

I used to order for my clients for two reasons: 1) You are right, smugmug's cart could use some "user friendliness" updates, and 2) I wanted to edit the images before smugmug shipped them.
They have solved #2 now. You can set a delay time, up to 7 days, from the date that the customer places the order. You get an email telling you which images were ordered. You can then edit the images and re-upload before they ship it. (and there is a "ship it now" button if you finish before the number of days you specified are up)

I use my own host name .... //www.dterryphotography.com Just shop around and get the best deal on a domain name that you can, and tell smugmug what it is, and violá, you're up and running like a pro.
You can set pricing per image, per gallery or for the entire portfolio. I set mine as a default for the entire portfolio and then override on specific galleries when the need arises.
They have tons of print sizes... and I have no idea what you mean by speed in that context.

no problems at all has not been slow for weeks now for me... if you are having any problems at all send them and email or post on dgin.com.. a nice guy by the name of andy their will help you out right away he works with smugmug and for dgrin.com thats smugmugs forums
for my own host name I used godaddy signed with them when they had a sale going on.
I made hostname //www.lamontphotography.com

I also had problems with smugmug being a bit slow, not terrrible, but not great either.
I am switching to pictage, but mostly because of the marketing help for my wedding business. Also, they let me vary the level of cost from month to month. |
