Anyone interested in surfing shots? I entered this in the free study and was very happy at the result.

I went a bit crazy for the month chasing surfing shots and I now love it. I find myself checking out the surfing conditions each morning and trying to find the best location and predicting weather patterns, it really has become an addiction.

I didn’t realize how hard it was but the enjoyment from this aspect of sports photography is worth it.

For anyone interested here are my latest surfing action shots, most of these are taken during our winter in overcast conditions with storms nearby.

Great fun, enjoy.

I can't say I am a surfing fan, but your free study image was very nice. How far away from the surfers were you? Did you wade out into the sea to get close enough or have you cropped the image to make for a tighter comp?

Back when I used to surf (stone age), I also took lots of surf photos. It was difficult to get good shots though because I didn't have a huge lens or a water housing. I usually ended up shooting from the pier, which is okay, but also very limiting. I'm still working on getting the wife's approval for the 600mm f4 lens.

Anyway, yeah, I love a good surf photo.

That shot was taken on a point break where I could get quite close with only getting my feet wet walking over the rocks.

It is only slightly cropped. I'm actually waiting for the sun to come up now (5.30 am my time) so I can go back to that spot as the conditions will be perfect today.

yeah I love good surf photography, but I would rather be in the water myself. Seeing as its not too often that I'm by a beach my camera can take a break when I am there!

These are great. I sure wish I lived somewhere that I could take these kinds of pics. Great job, and keep posting them. That way, at least I can dream.

Surfing shots are my thing. I am working on getting a water housing for my 20d to get into the thick of it.

Good surf shots are tough to get without a wet housing or a long lens. I'm hoping to have both eventually, but for now make do w/ what I've got. There are also a lot of good before and after surf session shots to get.

Here's one from today, however I didn't take it because I am the one in the water. We got a decent SW swell over the weekend and happened to be camping at a great local break called Jalama Beach. Even though this isn't the biggest wave (was overhead on Sat) and the shot could be better, it's cool to see myself as the one in the water for once. Oh, and I know it isn't actually "surfing", but hey, I'm a sponger and proud of it!

TOTALLLY!! i live 5 miles from the beach and am there almost every day either surfing or taking pictures of surfers. I don't have a long lens of my own so a lot of my surf shots are more of surf culture, etc. I do get a chance to borrow a lens every so often though and I plan to get one of my own in the next month or so. Here's some:

ENJOY :) your free challenge entry was awesome!!! great work!

Some good ones there Tim. I liked 28A the best. 5A is great too except for the Sun being on the wrong side.

Thanks for the comments Shannon and Owen, The two you picked Owen were without the 2x extender, you can really see the difference.

The field of surf photography recently lost a legand. Warren Bolster died September 6th. He was a great surf and skate photographer.

Keegbow i just had a look at your surfing pics via your link and i noticed some of your shots you used your extender and some you didnt. why does it seem that your shots without the extender are not only clearer but seem to be more zoomed? I am interested because i am looking at getting that lense with the extender or something with a bit more reach with surfing shots in mind.
am i just imagining things or is this the case?

cheers
nick

Hey Nick, the shots without the extender were usually shot closer and better light. For this type of photography the 2x extender is not really good enough for me and I now hardly use it.

I believe the 1.4 x extender would be a better option although not as good in lenght the sharpness is good or so they say.
