After rating all the images on the current challenge I have come to the conclusion that alot of people aren't thinking befor they shoot. The way I vote on an image is by asking myself first if it met the challenge, then would I or anyone hang this up in their house. This is also the same questions I ask myself before I shoot or set up a shot. I just wish more people would think "is this interesting" instead of "dose this simply fulfill the challenge".

I hope you don't mind hanging up advertisement photos of a product that you wouldn't buy.....

To be honest I have seen alot of advertisments that I have really liked the image on, some of the best pictures I have seen have been advertisments. This challenge is for images that sell products, services, or anything else that people sell. Tell me that you haven't looked through a travel brocure and wouldn't mind having a few of those up in your house. Advertising dosen't have to be product shots.

That's a pretty Bold Statement, to say that people don't think before they shoot. Kind of insulting...but I see what you mean.

I think I'll respectfully disagree with this statement.

I see a lot of variety, everything ranging from florals shots, buildings, sculptures, people working, people playing, etc, etc.

Variety means people were thinking, they were looking, they were trying for something. If a lot of the photos fell short of your expectations I think that is because this site may be more of a learning site than an experienced photographers site.

A learning site will show photographers grappling with ideas more than showing off polished skills.

You know what I fear? The day we show up at this site and we are overun with too many polished photos ready fo magazine covers. That day will mark the death of the learning site and more the day that Digital Photo Challenge joins the ranks of dozens of other ego stroking semi pro photo sites. Blechhh!!!

I wasn't saying that they don't think, I am sure they put some thought as to what the challene is and how to fulfill the requirements. I would just like to see more shots that reflect people thinking about how to make things look better. With most of the shots here you have the chance to take things over and over until you get them right, I really don't see an excuse for submitting a picture if you personally wouldn't like it enough to have hanging on a wall in your house.

same for me. some of my favorite ads in the world are, um well, ads, butit has nothing to do with the product they represent, but the artistry behind the concept!

I think you might want to check out the Q&A forum under set up time. There was a brief discussion about skills, talent, etc.

I think what we were saying is that there are still a lot of folks that are learning exactly what it takes to make a nice idea into a great photo.

Sometimes when you are just learning it doesn't matter if you take 1,000 photos, if you aren's sure of the easy and practiced way to get that shot you'll still come up short.

When I looked at these photos (and some of my lame attempts) I loved it. It meant that there was a challenge that people couldn't figure out so easy. Maybe there wasn't a ready made subject just waiting for them to pluck. Maybe they just weren't real thrilled by the challenge..whatever.

When I saw the photos I saw that this was a challenge. The real question is will anybody learn from this challenge? I did. I learned all week. My shot was after I had gone through some other options... And then it was part of a concept in my head based on an article I wanted to write.

Anyways, if I see a lot of good photos I sometime wonder if the challenge was challenging enough to push people out of their comfort zone.

I predict that because we are a very, very, very very (did I say very yet) commercial society there will not be a loss of pictures this round. The real trick is avoiding the explosion of adverts that can poison your creativity.

hokie,

i hope you don't mind my saying that it genuinely does seem sometimes like some people just sometimes seem to be like 'oh ill just shoot whatever i happen to walk past or seems to be passing outside the window right now and put it on this internet site'. and there's nothing wrong with that in the grand scheme of things. after all, this is a site for all skill levels.

but i don't think that there's anything wrong with exhorting everyone to try harder, to really give it some thought, to really try to amaze, to knock 'em dead. that's just another part of helping people improve, along with the positive encouragement. : )

>>>I just wish more people would think "is this interesting" instead of "dose this simply fulfill the challenge".<<<

You had me until I got to this line. Because right here, you have become completely subjective. I've received several comments about the subject of my photo being more or less lackluster, but I personally find it fascinating and could continue to shoot it for quite some time. You can say I'm wrong, but you're the one that's wrong :)
