Long story short, all my camera stuff was snagged off the trunk of my car, while i wasnt looking. I know I only had about $1400 in equiptment, which is how much a lens costs for some people. Regaurdless it is alot of money for a 17 year old. My only sources of income are a $6.50 an hour part time job and taking pictures (which is not going to work anymore). I guess I'm just sorta bummed that I wont be taking pictures for awhile, until I get enough money to buy a new one. : )

Yea, im sure this has happened to other people, any suggestions?

Report it to the police and then claim on your insurance I guess.

File a police report and then file a claim under your parents' homeowner's insurance. Stolen property is covered whether or not it was in the house at the time.

most home owner's insurance covers such things. The downside is that most of them have a $500 deductible. but if you had $1500 worth of equipment you would still get a check for $1000. That could get you a body and a cheap lens to get you going again. Have your parents call your insurance company and see what they can do for you.

Yup, first file a police report... then claim it on your parent's homeowners insurance. You may be able to claim it on your auot insurance, if you have full coverage on your car.

Edit: darn my typing is getting worse.

Stay positive, even when someone offers you a point n shoot to work with in the meantime.

I was robbed of my camera at gunpoint last year, and waited a month before I could get a new one.

Driving past beautiful sunsets and lightning shots became very depressing for me in that time.
Don't let it happen to you.

Yes, i filed a police report 20 mins later, and correction to my first post, it was my friends car. My dad is checking the insureance as soon as possible. Yea, maybe ill barrow one from somebody.

why would you leave it out sitting around like that?
09/04/2006 03:30:59 PM · #9
Be careful about claiming something so small (relative I know) on home insurance - read VERY carefully the impact on next years premium and future claims. Some policies would be fine and others not...

yea, i made a mistake

I was on a two day trip to a concert, and i was looking for my phone charger in my backpack, and I emptied out my whole back pack so I was certain it was not in there. Then I packed it up and started seraching in the car. When i popped my head back out, it was gone.

That really sucks bro. Similar story down here, friend of mine had a vx2100 video camera and a 600 dollar fisheye lens stolen right outa the back seat of a car as well.

If you have the serial number (or just a really good description) call around to the local Pawn Shops- usually these guys- thiefs not pawn owners- try to turn things around before a report can be made.

We had a camera stolen out of the store I worked in. We notified the pawn dealers and before the cops had even arrived to do the report one had called to say he had it and was stalling the guy until the police arrived.

Damn, that sucks. Insurance companies seem to be out to rip everyone off so it'll probably cost you or your parents like 5x as much if you claim it.

Maybe you can get used stuff and save a little money?

I've gotten a few things off of fredmiranda.com and I've never had any problems. It is a direct purchase from the seller and you can check back on their feedback and ask others that have bought from someone. Got my d70s and just picked up another d70 from there.

Locally is always better as you might get a better deal and can avoid shipping, not to mention you get the gear right away.

try the buy/sell forum on fredmiranda.com, or the used section of B&H photo

Ebay is ok as long as the seller has good feedback and the price doesn't seem too good to be true.

I actually had taken an insurance policy on my equipment, cost less than 2 bucks a month, zero deductable, that was an additional policy added to my home owners.

Good luck, heres hoping for the best.

One of the DPC folks, focuspoint, is selling his dslr on ebay. Maybe you can get in touch with him :) Here's a link to the thread where he announced it, which includes a link to the ebay page.

Well, you could always do like stdavidson did and get yourself lost in the desert for days on end. :D

Nah, forget I said that. It's dangerous and doesn't do a bit of good anyway.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you can get it replaced soon. Good luck!

I really feel bad for you. You had to work a lot of hours to get that camera. I am afraid that camera theft has become big business. I won't even leave mine in a locked car under a seat any more. Even if I am just going to the grocery store, if my camera is with me it goes with me, everywhere. I don't let it leave my sight. I even have trouble leaving it at home, fearing someone may just walk in and find my cache of cameras (about $5,000 worth) and walk off with them.
