When voting on challenges, should I push to give every photo a thoughtful vote or should I spend more time making comments (hopefully useful ones!) at the expense of not having time to vote on all of the photos? (I do make sure to vote on the minimum 20%.) I would love to vote and comment on every entry, but don't usually have the time when there are hundreds of entries. Opinions?

I vote on all and comment on as many as I can. When I do it in small batches it is easier - I just make 2-3 comments on every visit to the site. My comments are probably fairly useless as I am still in the this is what I like or what I see stage of commenting but it is teaching me a bit.

i think thoughtful comments are appreciated more. don't we hear people complaining about their lack of comments all the time? hehe. so unless you are a generous voter who hands out 7s and up, i say go for the commenting. no one seems to notice as much how many people voted on their pic as how many people didn't comment. ...at least from what i've seen so far. :o)

I always appreciate your comments amsyth..

If I vote on a challenge I try and vote on all the images. I'm trying to leave at least 7 comments per challenge. I'm still learning and don't want to be leaving comments that aren't appropriate or useless.

Voting is for the voter, so that they can't complain about the results of the challenge [theoretically!]. Comments on the otherhand, help us all learn.

I vote on all photos and comment on some that inspire me...

I hate to be the one that says this but the votes are what really counts. Vote first then worry about comments. To this day it cracks me up when I get a comment like Nice pic, or I don't like this. If that person thinks I am going to check helpful it doesn't happen all that often. If you like it tell me why if you don't like it tell me. Don't just leave those silly one sentence comments that don't help at all.

Although on the same note I get really irritated when someone tells me a photo is grainy when in fact it is really detail in a texture in the photo. Which happened to me in a recent challenge. So make sure if you are leaving a comment you at least know what you are talking about.

I also vote on all the entries and comment on as many as I can. Average about 100 a week. Did my 600th comment yesterday.

On the "life" challenge because I only got 3 comments so I decided to go to the 3 people that commented on my picture and comment on all their pictures.Couple more to go and I'll be finished commenting on all their pictures.

Well..I am new here (waves to everyone)..& I can not express to how important comments are to me!I have yet to have a competition end (I came in on the Life category), so maybe I am biased..but I want to get better & want feedback in way of letters more than numbers.

It's more educational to recieve votes from people who aren't impressed with your shot explaining why they didn't like it.

It's frustrating when you get only postive comments and your entry ends up on page 5+ of the results :)

Hi All

Comments are especially interesting when you get two diametrically opposite comments about the same picture.

It just goes to show that beauty/perspective/angle/content etc is in the eye of the beholder.

In the case I mention above it shows you just can not please all the people all the time.

After the challenge I may PM those members and get a more detailed comment. As after the challenge I can re-check my image notes and see what they then make of the image.

:~)

I'm making an honest attempt to comment on all the Macro shots this round. Whether it will happen, who knows. I've done about 30 so far.
I personally stopped voting a long time ago. Mostly because dialup is a pain, and I don't always have time to do 20%. But I do go through and pick the thumbnails that I like and open them, and then leave a comment. I went to do that for the Macro challenge, and just about everything I saw was excellent (at least in the thumbs) so I decided to comment on all (or as many as I can).
If I like the photo, I say good things. If I don't like the photo, I try to make suggestions as to what I would have done differently. I feel bad about saying I what I would change, but hey, if you don't like it, you don't have to listen to me. I might not even know what I'm talking about, so it doesn't really matter. -beamish-
