After perusing the site from this thread: Flash Photography blog (which is an excellent read btw)

I have come to the conclusion that I need to get my flash out of the hotshoe and place it remotely where it is most effective.

I have a speedlite 420EX right now, and it appears that the ST-E2 speedlite transmitter is the best option to trigger it remotely.

Anyone using the ST-E2?

Is it worth the 160-220 bucks that they are asking for these things?

Any issues or concerns?

Thanx in Advance...Andy

Get PW's. So much more reliable and versatile.

Had to look it up myself... short for Pocket Wizard... Radio controlled xmitter/receiver

Does the PW still allow for the flashes to work in the E-TTL2 mode? I believe the ST-E2 does, since it is from Canon, but curious about the pocket wizard, since I am also considering a purchase.

I have the ST-E2 with a 550EX and a 420EX - absolutely no problems with the combination at all.

I use it for macro work.

I too was thinking about the ST-E2, but was mildly concerned about the angle and effective range of the transmitter. I think the transmitter uses infrared, so therefore "line-of-sight" between the transmitter and slave has to remain.

The angle of transmission on the ST-E2 is only 80degrees, what happens if you want your speedlight somewhere else?

No, it would not appear the TTL remains with the pocket wizards, however being a radio transmission, you can put them anywhere, even fire them through walls.

Cheers,
Simon

The ST-E2 is pretty cool inside, and OK outside IMHO.

The pocket wizards do not give you ETTL metering, but are _very_ reliable for firing manually strobes, or your camera, remotely. Your 420 dosn't have a manual mode, so the Pocket Wizards would be limited use with it.

I've used an ST-E2 with a 580 and 420ex as slaves a few times, with good result.. For a quick setup it's really handy to be able to do off camera flashes with TTL metering.

My advice would be that if you're heading in the direction of studio work, or commercial location shoots, only get one if you can burn the money. If you upgrade to studio strobes you'll hardly ever get the ST-E2 out of your bag. (speaks the man who as a dusty one in his bag).

If you're into PJ work they are really great for environmental portraits. Take along a couple of speedlights, stick them behind furniture, on the desk, under the desk, behind the subject... Fire a test shot, adjust and then you're in business... When you're done just stick the speedlights back in your bag and walk away.

Also, consider getting a 550ex or 580ex as a 'master' for the wireless setup. That way you've got another flash, and you can fire the 420 as a slave.

Just my 2c worth..

And the 580 has three flash groups, IIRC the ST-E2 only has two.

You won't waste the 580-- you can use it on-camera and bounce it off the walls or ceiling or reflector.
