alright everyone I leave for Yellowstone and the Tetons on Friday, I have done some reasearch but would like all your help to be sure I got things covered. Please list your hot photo spots for either park for me so I can check my list.

Please list which park they are in so I can add them to the correct sheet.

Thus far I have:
Jenny Lake - Grand Tetons
Hidden Falls - Grand Tetons
Lake Yellowstone -Yellowstone
Hayden Valley - ??
Tower falls - Yellowstone
Old Faithful - Yellowstone
Schwabacher's Landing- Tetons
Barn on Mormon Row -Tetons (looking for directions if anyone can help)

Thanks
Rich

Hayden Valley is on the East loop of Yellowstone, more or less halfway between Fishing Bridge and the Falls. It's beautiful there.

Barn of Mormon Row, I know how to get there, but how to describe it. Hmmmm. It's a little ways out of Jackson, North on 189, then to the right, but I can't remember the name of the road. Then just a little on a dirt road that has a closed sign usually (but you can go on it anyway). Someone else is going to have to help you, I know the place visually, but don't know the names of the roads.

Have fun there! It's one of the most beautiful places in the world. Go slow and enjoy.

Mormon Row
Head north out of Jackson, toward Yellowstone, turn right at Gros Ventre junction. From there, you will see one of the old barns a mile or two down on the left. There is another dirt road just across from that barn that leads to the other one, a mile or so up on the right. The first one is the most popular, but the second one has a herd of bison that like to move through in front of it each morning.

Hit Oxbow Bend at sunset if you get a chance, but its also nice in the harsh, midday sun. It is just beyond the junction where you turn left to continue on toward Yellowstone. Oxbow sunset.

I'd also recommend a sunset at Great Fountain Geyser, as well as a sunset inside of Cuningham Cabin. It is also just off the main highway a few miles noth of Jackson and the airport.

Also, take a look from the Snake River overlook just off the highway. Ansel himself stood there and took one of his popular Teton shots. The shooting isn't so terrific there now, but I did pass over Ansel's footsteps, and that's kind of neat.

If you have time, pick up Tim Cahill's book, "Lost in My Own Backyard." He has some great day hikes that get you off the beaten path, and the wildlife ops sound amazing. Next summer, my intention is to follow his book between fishing and sipping all the great beer out there. Speaking of that, if you enjoy good beer, The Rancher, in the town square of Jackson, has $1.50 pint night every Tuesday. We always plan our trip around Tuesdays. Enjoy, and I'll be wishing I was there with you! Can't wait to see the shots.

Make sure you hit Artists Point at Yellowstone Falls at sunrise, I've never made it out at that time myself, but the scene turns to magic apparently. I'll see if I can find some pics.

This Gallery might give you seme inspiation on how you might like to shoot the lower falls.

Steve,

Thanks for the info on artist point, I had researched a photo I found on an image search of yellowstone that didnt say where it was taken from, which ended up having a likeness to the photos that you shared.

Thanks again,

Rich

Don't forget Norris Gyser Basin, IMHO the best gysers, girges, springs and the largest elk in the park, not far from the Canyon. Hayden Valley is one of your best chances for Grizzly, also moose, hundreds of buffale, elk and coyote. (great flyfishing for 2 to 3lb native Yellowstone cutthroat trout in the Yellowstone to south of Hayden). Lake Yellowstone has some wonderful views and photographic pleasures. Have fun, sorry I can't be there. Van

Rich,

The area between Canyon Village and Norris Gyser Basin. The two summers I worked in the park, the biggest racked elk were along this road. If you want a great geyser in the Norris, walk to Echineos (SP?) Geyser. Approx. 1/2 mile from the visitor center. It was my favorite in the park and it is regular (1.5 hours between spirts, if I remember, it can be as high as Old faithful but less people) Van

I don't think it's regular anymore. A lot of Norris is rather dried out now. But still absolutely beautiful.

Rich, It sounds like soooo much fun. I appreciate your post and the great ideas.

For all of you who would love to do the same thing, there's a GTG on Sept 28 - October 3 (or parts thereof). If interested take a look at this thread.

I'll be watching this thread and using your great research to help us. Thanks.

Yellowstone is a road trip for me (albeit a day there and a day back) but I haven't been in probably 5yrs. Great place for photos. I forget the name but there is a really great canyon (yellowstone canyon?) there. When I was last there it was raining and there was thunder and lighting-had to use my olympus stylus camera :)

enjoy

Well if you want Becky, I will give an overview of my trip when I return and will include highlights and lowlights of it once we return. That way you can have an idea for the DPC get together.

Let me know if there is any interest so I or my wife can keep a decent journal as I am doing the photography as well..

I truely thank everyone who has helped on this thread, this is what make this site and its members so great.

Thanks again,
Rich

Natural Bridge. Crappy photo, great place. Climb the (imposing) hill to get behind the bridge. Wonderful.

ETA if you get the chance, take the fire walk. Run by the park service out of West Thumb, early in the morning. It was great.

To all who are interested, I am back from my trip to Yellowstone and I am going to give a quick overview with a few tips on where to find wildlife for those going anytime soon.

We stayed on the West enterence of Yellowstone, in a town called west Yellowstone. There are a bunch of hotels and little shops there and is right outside the park. When entering the park you pay the park fee of $25.00 per car. (includes everyone in it) This $25.00 is good for both the Tetons and yellowstone for 7 days.

Anyways, Driving in the west entrence toward the grand loop you are following the Madison river on you left. About 1 mile from the gate is an active eagles nest, so for those looking for eagle photos (make sure you have 200+ mm lens) this area was the most productive for eagles. Also right on the West entrence road, there we alot of bison and elk grazing in the many valleys that lined the side roads, but also in the middle of the road so be careful.

Yellowstone is comprised of 2 loops. The upper loop takes you through the mountainous area and includes places like Gibbons falls, Tower falls, Udine falls, many spots for wildlife and smaller geyser basins. Also this will be where, if any place you will see bear. The hiking trail to the base of Tower Falls is closed due to a rock slide that hasnt been cleaned up so I do not reccommend it because the only overlook was really really crowded! Also if returning to either the east or west side of the park you will pass right by Haden valley. This is a beautiful landscape worthy of time. (people who are good in pano's will like it here)

The Lower Loop has Old faithful, the connector to tetons, Moose falls, lewis falls, yellowstone lake, The fishing bridge (another area for osprey and eagle) and many large geyser basins and again wildlife photo ops. Artist point is one of the highlights of the lower loop it is in the Grand canyon of yellowstone and is absolutely breaktaking. Be prepared for crowds however as it is a tourist area. If you want a really nice shot and are in decent shape I suggest uncle toms trail, comprised of 320 steps basically straight down this trail will bring you super close onto this fall. This shot is taken from the tourist area.

I will briefly comment on the Tetons, The teons were very hazy the day I went, there is a Major wildfire close by and The haze and smoke caused by it is prdominate through the park. The park over all is very breathe taking with the highlights being (on clear sunny days with minimal wind) Oxbow bend Scenic turnout, Snake River turnout, Barn on Mormon Row, and Jenny Lake. I also suggest for those who go to pay the $7.50 to cross Jenny lake and do the 1/2 mile hike to hidden falls and insperation point. On a clear day in fall I would believe the view from insparation point would be awesome. Here is a very heavily post processed shot I took in one of the many overlooks on the Main road of the Tetons.

I will add more pictures on this thread of my adventure of Yellowstone, I have been trying to choose for the September Free study, and as soon as I do I will post other photos.

Hope this helps those interested and Sory for the length

*-Rich
