Has anyone ventured into freelance stock photography, doing their own marketing etc? I am working towards going there and wondered if anyone has any advice or tips that might be useful? For example, what sort of website style would you recommend? How do you reach prospective buyers? What target areas (subject matter) have you chosen or rejected? etc?

Just thought I'd throw a line out and see if anyone has any initial input.

Thanks,

M

I have no practicle experience in this area so take this with a grain of salt.

My thoughts on this are that it would be good to offer as a service but relying on it solely would be tough going.

The reasoning behind it is that "time is money", not just for you the photographer but for the designer, magazine etc etc who is looking for the stock photos.

Since time is money and assuming your prices are competative I would think (just personal opinion mind you) that designers etc are going to look for artwork by starting where they can view art in the most efficient fashion. With that in mind I would assume that a site that represents many photog's would be their first stop since they can view the work of many on one site.

I think your own site targetting stock cant hurt but the hard part would be luring designers to it. In a sense your asking them to spend extra time (and in turn money) to make a special trip to your site in addition to (or perhaps in place of) their current stock sites.

My overall idea on this is to have my own specialized area(s) -- then target specific potential markets (buyers) whom would be interested in these areas, not just a shot in the dark general site to compete with the macro sites etc. So it would actually be saving time for the targeted buyers by offering photos already in their interest groups.

Decide what you want to shoot. Get a copy of "Photographer's Market" to find buyers who buy that kind of work and start sending them submissions.

The key, I beleive, is still going to be to make it as easy as possible for those who need your pics. With that in mind sending the pics to them as Idnic stated would be a start. Once you get their interest and a good selection of specific images just make sure your site is easy to navigate and fast.
