So I have an outdoor wedding comming up soon and the ceremony will take place at dusk. I am looking at getting a lense with an f 2.8 or better speed and am looking, even more specifically at the Tamaron 28-75mm for the price I don't think I can do much better I need to stay under $500. My question is am I overlooking something? I need low light capabilities for under $500 suggestions appreciated.

P.S. I am shooting a D70.

Flash? Anything faster than f2.8? Maybe a 50mm f1.8?

If it gets really dark, f2.8 might not be enough.

The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is s great lens, but it might not be enough.

I use nothing but 2.8 lenses for my weddings and at dusk I have found myself wishing for a faster lens. The problem comes when the couple is moving (dancing, tossing the bouquet, etc) and you have to focus in low light. A flash will, of course, light the scene. And higher ISO will help out the exposure. But you still have to be able to focus!

I upgraded to the Canon 24-70 2.8L USM specifically because it focuses faster than my Tamron 28-75 2.8. The faster focusing of the Canon lens helps. But not as much as I had hoped. You still have to have enough light to detect the focus.

Anyway... just something to think about.

i have a night wedding in nov and they've said it's going to be lit by candles, so i'm planning to order the sigma 30mm 1.4 in the next few weeks...

(one more car payment first... woohoo!)

Why don't you rent a 70-200 f/2.8 VR? Rentglass.com now rents Nikon glass.

Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX or tamron 17-50 2.8 SP are good. IMO better range than the 24-70/28-75 2.8 lenses on a 1.5/1.6 crop body.

50 1.8 works but limits your POV.

Flash is still the #1 tool of wedding photographers at receptions.

2.8 should be fine. Any less light and you're almost gonna have to use flash anyway.

FWIW, I use an f/4 lens with flash at almost all weddings now. If I can't use flash during the ceremony I'll use my 50mm f/1.8.

Edit: I just looked at your lenses you have. If you don't have a flash, I suggest you skip buying a lens for now and get a flash and some sort of diffuser (pocket soft box or Lightspphere).

I have an SB600 with an omni bounce for the flash shots but I was hoping to avoid flash during the ceremony itself would a 50mm 1.8 be a better decision that the Tamaron? It would be cheaper. What the heck maybe i will do both that still comes in under $500. Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate it.
