i'm looking at the camera self portrait challenge.

there's a few shots with no cameras in them ... which has me a little confused.

but i wanted to ask for opinions. some people are using one camera to take a photograph of another camera. um ... IMO that's NOT a self portrait.

does that make such images invalid?

your thoughts???

Well, that will be up to each individual voter to decide, since not meeting the challenge isn't grounds for DQ.

Pretty much assumed everyone used a mirror and either timer or remote control.

that's the assumption i used ... until i saw the entries. it's obvious quite a few DIDN'T do that.

so they're not actually 'self' portraits.

Guess I just don't care heheh. Toss some 1's at the fools who entered people portraits and chill.

Be very, very careful making assumptions like that. There are many incredible photographers on here who are capable of producing images that are very deceiving. What you may think you see...might not be quite what you think. You may actually be voting down someone who has managed to deceive you legally. If that photographer is capable of that, then a low vote certainly isn't fair to them.

Photos that to me just looked like a photo of a person and no visible camera in the shot I just left unvoted for. I didn't want to vote someone lower on accident when I just didn't see the camera in the shot. I think there were 5 shots like that.

I tend to do that on photos I don't think meet challenges at all. The photos aren't bad.. they just aren't what the challenge was.

In my opinion, if I can't see that the photo has met the challenge, then it's perfectly fine to vote it down. I give a vote to each image based on what I see. If there's something in the image that I cannot see, then what use is that? If the photographer has some fantastic idea, but it's not come across to me, the photo deserves a lower mark than one that does present the idea.

Not voting on photos that you don't think meet the challenge strikes me as being a bit odd. Surely, voting on them is the whole point?

FWIW, though, I don't automatically give a 1, as it looks like some people do. I'll probably deduct between 1 and 3 points for not meeting the challenge, depending on how off the mark the photo seems.

In this specific challenge, I didn't vote anything down for DNMC that had an actual camera in it. I did vote photos down that just seemed to have a person in. If, maybe, one of them had a camera reflected off a tiny button, or something equally obscure, then that's tough luck I'm afraid.

I am guessing that this might be another language barrier issue. Kind of like all the landscape pictures in the lenscap challenge. I think it is very possible that some had no clue what the challenge meant.

Some people don't read challenge descriptions, either.

Well that's very kind of you... Even the people holding a camera? That explanes...

BTW you can allways flip a mirrored image to make it look like it isn'nt made with a mirror

Same here. Some like how I edited, others don't. So it's a mixed bag for me.

If I can look like a terrorist and attempt to board a plane carrying things that look like explosives, weapons, etc. - then I'm busted. A photographer who brilliantly succeeds in fooling me into thinking that a picture was taken in a manner that does not respond to the the given task, is thereby hoisted on his/her own petard.

Well mine was not flipped...is a self portrait...but doesn't look as such...and I am getting hit down...!

I'm really surprised that the non-mirror images are being voted down. Personally I tended to vote them higher because they are more aesthesetically pleasing to me than seeing mirrored writing. Guess you just can't predict stuff around here. Glad I didn't enter my pic now, as it would have been the right way around and been thrashed.

It's because everyone thinks they want to see some creativity. But when they see it they vote it down because it doesn't fit into the narrow idea they have about how the challenge show look.
