I'm sitting at my computer trying finishing editing a book cover, when realize: I have no clue how to extend an image.

all I need is to create an extension on the cover by 5/8th of an inch. I'm sure it's super simple, but I would be greatful for some help.

If by extending you mean that you want the image to remain the same size, but you want to add to the "canvas", You want to create a border of sorts.

Image > Resize > Canvas Size. Insert values.

From what I'm reading you only want to extend on 1-3 side an not all 4. Just select the side you don't want the extend and your there.
