Hey Everyone.

I am working on my smugmug account. I know that many of you use them as well. My question is that I have been using photoreflect for online proofing of events. I like them because they automatically send things to the printer and customers can order there. I have recently purchased a pro account on smugmug. Is there a way to set your own prices for a gallery as you do in photoreflect? And then what happens when a customer places an order? Have you been happy with them?

I am interested to hear what you think. I don't know if I should use a photoreflect link on my smugmug account or try to customize my smugmug to handle it.

Advice?

Smugmug just recently announced the ability to proofing of an order before the ship it. In fact, I just did my first edits on an order that went through smugmug.

You do, of course, need the Pro account in order to set your prices. Then, when you customize a folder, set the number of days (from 0 to 7) lag time for processing. If you set it to something other than 0, then smugmug gives you that much time before they automatically process and ship the order.

For weddings, I have always posted proofs and told the couple to let me know what they wanted to have printed. Then I would edit and repost. Extended family, with whom I generally had no contact, had no such luxury. They would tend to order straight from smugmug and get the proof quality images.

Now, everyone can order straight from smugmug and I, having set the lag time to 7 days, have time to quickly edit the images before they are shipped. And, as in today, if I get done before 7 days are up, I can click "ship it" and it will tell them to go ahead and process the order.

I like it.

BTW, we use PhotoReflect for our sports photography. With PhotoReflect we have to process and ship our own, so it's a little more work. But it has other advantages as well.

Are either of these two sites easier then just posting the proofs on my own site and uploading the printable files to mpix to print?

That is the way I have been doing it becuase I like the quality of mpix and the pricing. Is smugmug just as good?

Does photoreflect just manage photos for you and orders etc?

Yes, I like their quality very much. Some day I would hope for more paper options. But for now, I print almost everything at smugmug on their Lustre paper and it looks great.

Yes.

Smugmug handles the order completely. From the online album, to the ordering process, to the charging of the credit card. And if you don't use the proofing option, you don't have to do anything besides upload the pictures and set the prices. They will print and ship the images and send you a check at the end of the quarter.

Quality wise: I can't directly comment as I print lustre at smugmug and metallic at mpix.

But if you prefer to keep your ordering and printing processes separate from each other, then Photoreflect is the way to go. Photoreflect will handling the online ordering and charging the credit card. Then it's up to you to fulfill the order. You let them know when the order has shipped and then they will send you a check.
