I have just recently gotten Neat Image and I must say I enjoy it a great deal! It really does an amazing job and if anyone is considering it, you should definitely try it!

With that being said, I am indeed having a little trouble in certain instances telling what exactly would be a better effect. I know many photo comments I have read say something about using NI ineffectively, making the shot look too "plastic"like. I thought if we posted examples of how we are using NI, we can give and get advice in a central location. (My apologies if this has been done already; I could not find anything in a forum search.)

For this example photo, I have one "before" shot and tried two different settings in NI to get the two "after" shots.

(before)
(after 1)
(after 2)

I'm interested to see what people think about these. I think that the shot didn't have excessive noise to begin with but using NI brought out different aspects of the shot in different ways. The first example definitely has a lot more contrast. Incidently, here is the original image:

I hope that people want to participate in this. Please know that this is NOT a learning thread where I am teaching. I am wanting just as much help as others do, but I am willing to offer some imput on other people's shots and hopefully I can be at least a little bit helpful. :-)

I can't give you an opinion because my monitor pretty much... sucks... but I'll try it.

If people want to post stuff here, you don't have to critique my stuff first. :)

It depends on your style but if you don't want a painterly look then the best situation is to use neatimage with a photo that has been exposed to the right so you have less noise to begin with. In your photo it would have been better had you used fill light on the flowers so you didn't have to brighten them in post which makes the noise stand out.

Personally, I think the photo you posted as your first test shot is only so-so. It suffers from severe underexposure and the light wasn't falling well on your subject. Fill flash would have helped this shot, for sure, as yanko mentioned.

Anyway, I think you would be better off if you started off with a photo that's better exposed and utilizes better lighting.

My NI way:

I autoprofile every image, the sample area I use is from the region / feature I want NI to affect the most.

This is an easy way to have NI affect mainly the sky - or a face - or a building - or the rocks - or ... whatever ... before using layer masks to uber fine tune.

Of course play with the noise levels / reducion sliders to fine tune.

Play with the sample area size until you get the effect you want.
