the emotional stress of marrying my husband...
it's still taking its toll :0P

I don't know about worst illness, but the worst pain and suffering I've had to endure (not counting almost 41 hours of labor with my first son) had to be a gall bladder episode which sent me to the ER in what I thought for certain were the final throes of death. Man, that sucker HURT. Of course, I thought it was a heart attack and I was dying but they figured out what it was, and told me I could either leave it alone and hope for no more attacks, or I could have it removed. I said (in no uncertain terms, if I recall) to get that thing out of me and fast. Taking it out was a simple laparoscopic procedure; I just needed a couple of days to recover. I've been peachy keen ever since. :)

I had a Branchial Cleft Cyst in my neck, which was bad enough, but it then became infected and I couldn't move my neck at all without a lot of pain. I had to go through surgery on my neck to get it taken out, and then stay in hospital for 3 days with a tube draining the blood out of the whole where it once was. That was pretty gross. The feeling when they took out the tube, which had a large bit inside to keep it in, was absolutely the most disgusting and painful thing I've ever experienced.

All that's left now is a fading scar and numbness in the whole left side of my neck. Luckily the nerve damage from the op wasn't enough to paralyse parts of my face like the corners of my mouth, or effect movement in my shoulder.

the symptoms can be treated with varied success but mainly the key is to pace yourself VERY CAREFULLY.

If you are genuinely interested in more info there's great info here:

does it affect your ability to work? do you get some kind of disability?
08/12/2006 05:52:26 PM · #11
pain wise, when I was in my early 20s I got a kidney stone a year for 5 years which many people say is more painful than child birth.

My mother had a kidney stone once and agreed - it was more painful than child birth. My father had one and his doctor gave him vicadin and then told him (off the record) to wash it down with beer.

It absolutely affects my ability to work, drive, stand for very long, concentrate, go shopping, clean, play, do just about anything. All aspecs of my life are severly affected by it.

I'm not on disability right now but I feel like I'm barely holding on. Many people with CFS end up on disability.

Pleurisy sucked pretty bad, hurt like a heart attack for days before I went to the hospital, then they knocked me unconcious for 7 days. But I've had blood poisoning too, that was almost as bad and took 6 days in hospital.

My depression after losing my parents in 11 months. After their death I've never felt the same again, got some health problems at the same time and had to quit with my study. Lost almost everything I loved.

Doing pretty good now although lots of things still have to improve, but that just takes time and lots of patience ( which I don't have, haha ). The good news is that I start with a study again in a couple of weeks :)

I don't think I'll ever get over it, but I accepted it.

Stepped on something and ignored it for days, even when it swelled the size of my foot to match the size of my head.... but the dark streaks past my knee got my attention :P I dun like docs!!

Diagnosed with Cervical Cancer at 29, while pregnant with my second child. Have had a total hysterectomy, so no more cancer but also no more kiddies for me.

My reality check: I'm alive and get to see my children grow up :)

Manic depression is the worst illness I have ever had, and still have. It is a massive rollercoaster ride, every day. I can be up on cloud nine and 5 seconds later down in the pit.

The worst physical condition I have is Multiple Pituitary Hormone Disorder. Basically, my pituitary gland failed to function, causing growth, thyroid and, shall we say, male appendage failures. If these had not been corrected by medicine I would be a VERY different person today. I had to have growth hormone injections every day for 8 years, some of which were human growth hormone taken from dead organ donors - as distinct from synthetic growth hormone - which has increased my chance of contracting the human equivalent to Mad Cow Disease - Creutzfeld Jacob Disease, also known as young man's Alzheimers. I also have to take thyroid medications every day for the rest of my life and have testosterone medications also.

I dont mean to garner sympathy about this, just to contribute to the thread.

I had mono when I was in my late 20's. Have no idea how I got it. If someone told me while I was sick that I was going to die I would have just accepted it. I had no energy for weeks, I lid in bed and just getting up to use the bathroom left me weak and drained.

MIGRANES as a kid and still get them now and then. However, when I was a kid, there was no magic migrane pills! I had to take St. Joesph's Asprin for children and SUFFER for days with a headache. Failed 3rd and 6th grade!

Worst sickness as an adult was the SHINGLES. Got them last March. Doctor said unusual for a 40 something year old to get but I got them about the time I (we, wife and I) decided to build a home!

You can see what kind of home gave me the shingles at //www.kenskid.smugmug.com . However, the home is going up without a hitch and don't expect Shingles to reappear anywhere but on the roof!

My brother-in-law got shingles a couple of years ago, he was 45 or so. He got them near/in his eye and had a lot of problems and pain with them. His eye still gives him problems now and the medication he was taking caused all sorts of troubles with his blood pressure. Not good.

Fire and oil burning the flesh off my right hand. All I am saying is don't try tossing a grease fire out the back door! Got lucky only suffered 2cd degree burns no nerve damage. Next to that heart ache is the worst pain

Some good natured skin cancer (got a nice scar on my butt now, wanna see? It was rather painful to have to undress before that beautiful nurse). But the most annoying is my allergy to cats (all good looking girls have cats) and the constant sneezing because of hayfever.

Never broke a thing altough I did cut my wrist once (by accident, nothing serious hit, but I could see the main tendon) and when I tried to shorten the length of my nails on a knife sharpener (those rotating stones) it grabbed my thumb and I grinded the top of my thumb off (not so serious that it didn't grew back on). Maybe I have a mental problem? :)

Most painful must have been when I hit something small and hard with my little toe. (the 18 stitches in my head were not so bad)
