IT for me, I'm starting my associates degree this semester. Going to take some other courses and get work experience, and then hopefully start my own security/consulting company.

I might take a photography class or two.

As much as I would like to study Photography, I'm unsure of the value of having an actual degree versus just getting out there and doing it, and it would be completely impractical for me since I have a longstanding banking career, currently working in a bank that will reimburse me for A's and B's in related coursework. So I'm going after a Finance degree and am content to hone my photo skills on my own.

how about a staff photog at a newspaper? you don't have to be biz for that.

Have been planning on going back to school for the photography certificate program (only photo. related classes, not all the extra stuff...), it's just a matter of getting off my butt to get down & register. I do really want to go though, it'd be awesome to be able to make a career (or at least a money making hobby) out of photography

I'm doing a study right now, still have to do it 'till Feb. 2007.
after that a specialisation (probably commercial photography) of one year. then I'll have my diploma.
After that I think I wanna do another specialisation, fashion and portraits, but it all depends on the money.

@ Elsapo: I'm not a "business"-person either, but there are many ways to do this. I think you should go for it, you have a talent.

you both do.

and yeah, you don't need a business background unless you're running your own show, it helps. but be a staff photog or do exhibitions: not so much.

I strongly advise you to not major in communications. if you want to get into advertisement, go into marketing. communications, and you're going to have to take my word on this, is a useless degree. I've known many, many people with such a degree who now work at Starbucks. I'm not saying this to be mean, but rather to warn you. I work with many people that have communications degrees, and I'm being absolutely serious when I tell you that every single one of them regrets it.

I am actually going into my 4th year of Architectural Engineering (5 year program). Although this is not in the photography field, it gives me a lot of ideas for photos as well as a lot of photo opportunities (I will be studying in Leeds, England this coming semester, and will be doing 22 days through europe before the semester starts).

I love photography, but don't think I could turn it into a profession... If I had to do it as a job, and it had to be done to other people's specifications, it would definitely lose its fun for me. I would rather work a job I am good at and is neccessary and just go shooting on the weekends for my own personal enjoyment.

what jobs did they try to apply to in communications?

Fine arts since I was 8 year old.

Apparently it's not worth going into photog colleges if you're already quite advanced. I agree but hate all the technical aspects of photography. So yeah.

Radio, television, public relations, media relations...you name it. The problem is, you don't actually learn anything all that specialized with a communications degree, and on top of that, there are millions of people out there running around with the same degree. Consider this...there's a reason why so many college football players major in communications. Again, if advertising is what you're interested in, then go into Marketing. I believe that any college advisor will tell you the same thing.

It'd be interesting to poll and see how many people actually ended up working in the field they studied. :)
