I took this image last weekend..
//www.flickr.com/photos/shanky_pec/209740949/

I liked the tall grass on a hiking trail. I feel good about the image, the colors and diognal line. But wondering how does it feel for you..
Is it a mediocre shot or just another picture not to be highlighted.

Thx.

How about somewhere inbetween?;)

What you saw was undoubtedly nice and I've often admired grass for the very same reasons. Translating that beauty into two dimensions is a challenge.

Photographing grass in a way that makes an interesting image can be done (see pointandshoot's image in the Zen challenge) but in general there isn't much to hold the viewer's attention in a shot like yours.

There are ways to spice it up a bit when photographing something like this. Things that come to mind are different angles (lower perhaps), closeups of seedheads, brightly colored grass (reds, yellows, purples), something hiding in it, or a colorful BG (like a sunset).

As it stands, the busyness of composition, and lack of contrast and detail makes it an average image, IMHO.

I find it a pleasant image (I like the color and diagonal, as you mentioned), but it doesn't grab me the way great art should.

Good stock potential.

Who says art can't be crap? ;-) Anyway, it's appealing, but like posthumous said doesn't particularly grab my attention.

This is just my opinion: Art should make some sort of statement other than just show a scene.

Oh hell, Leroy... if anything I'm thinking the exact opposite LOL. I think any time "art" becomes so aware of itself that it is consciously "making a statement" it stops being art and becomes propaganda, social commentary, whatever. For me the purest art just "is", it's simply visual and it affects me at a very fundamental level.

I suppose that is why art is so subjective and means different things to different people. :-)

@Bear
A beautiful explanation.
Art makes different sense to diff people.

I won't get into the art debate.....

But the only problem I have with this shot, is that my eye doesn't know where to go.

However, it may make good stock, or be a good element in creating digital art.

When you are looking for a scene, try to remember the 3's...background, foreground and subject. Your shot is somewhat subjectless looking.

It is a pleasant image, not portfolio worthy, but catalog worthy :)

Possibly neither crap or art. But you intent is vague. Seems to flicker on my screen as a document about grass. Possibly could be viewed as a scientific statement about sedge, coupled with a proper name, like Audubon - with no intention for art or crap, it might be useful.

I can't decide which one of those two to use for my signature. ;-)

FWIW, I would agree that it would make a decent stock image. Even subjectless, it has some appeal to it and that is what I sometimes look for in stock photos. Whether you call that art or not doesn't really matter. :)
