Hey everyone.

Can't find any help anywhere else so please help me!

I quite regularly take pictures at night. Living in London, we've got a lot of scenic buildings with beautiful illumination and everything. But, as soon as I want to put people infront of the building, everything goes awry!

My question is simply this: How do you change the setting on a Canon 300D (Rebel) from 1st curtain to 2nd curtain? (Not sure about the terminology) I want to be able to take a photo with a shutter speed of 2 seconds to capture all the background, and then have the flash fire at the end to fix the foreground in place instead of firing the flash and then leaving the shutter open for the next 2 seconds.

I've got some very spooky (albeit beautiful) pictures already. But it would be nice if people would stop telling me it looks as if the people were pasted onto a postcard! Here is one example.

Thanks in advance.

You can't do it on a 300D, not even with the hack. I may be wrong but I think if you use a 580ex flash you can set the 2nd curtain sync on that!

I don't think that setting is available on the 300D. You could hack the firmware, then the setting is there, but I don't know if you want to do that?

by the way, I need a username and a password to see the photo.

Sorry about the photo! The website is my personal blog (thought it would give you direct access!). Will try to upload it onto another site quickly.

It has been a long time ago that I had the 300D but I know for sure that you can enable it with one of the hack´s.

Next question: 1)do you know where I might be able to find the hacks, and 2) is there risk involved with installing the hacks?

Thanks guys!!!

firmware hack

Among the functions the firmware hack makes available are:

Enables Custom functions menu
Enables Flash Exposure Compensation using SET button
Enables SET button function when shooting (to change image quality or shooting parameters)
Enables Shutter release w/o CF card
Flash sync speed in Av mode
Enables RAW+JPEG rec. Enables setting the quality of embedded JPEG
Enables Mirror Lock up
Enables the ability to select the autofocus mode: AI servo, Oneshot etc.
Enables setting ISO 3200

It's not there, but I'm very sure it is in the hack... *confused*

there are some risks, but you can always put back the original firmware from the canon site. in the link above, there is a link to the canon site.

Second curtain flash sync is available as part of the hack

I was always under the impression that they couldn't get the 1st/2nd curtain feature to work with the hack? I have it on mine and it states in the documentation that it doesn't work!!

Not used this function so I cant say it works or not!

My understanding is that with the hack you can use second curtain sync, but not with the on camera flash or with a Canon EZ flash, you need to have a Canon EX flash...

The 550EX and 580EX will let you set 2nd curtain sync ON the flash itself.

If it's anything like my 430EX, then it's first *and* second, not just second.

Second-only is a camera setting on the XT. The firmware hacks I've seen for the Rebel claim that the option appears, but it doesn't work.

How about the Canon EOS 420EX Flashgun? Will that give me second curtain capabilities?

Sorry but are you referring to the quote or to my question?

Thanks in any case.

The 300D hack will allow you to set for second curtain sync. Also, it allows for Flash Exposure Compensation and other features.

Here's a quick link from a discussion about two of the major hacks.
