Hi! I have a question about the proper way to go about submitting a photo for challenges. I recall seeing something on DPC regarding this once but can't find it now... My question is: If I open my photos in Photoshop Elements and save them to my drive, choose the photo I am going to submit, make a copy of it then work on and submit the copy - have I done anything wrong? I believe I saw that if you opened your photos in Photoshop that it automatically did something to them that would make them not fit within the rules for DPC. I have submitted 3 photos in the past and I followed my process as described above but I want to ensure that I am doing it properly. Your help would be appreciated!

Your best bet is to use a card reader and copy/move the images to your hard drive. Any shot you want to work on (especially for challenges) you should copy to a work folder. Always make it a habit to work on a copy!

i use picture project which you probably got with your Nikon. It saves the NEF file to a seperate folder and adds a copy to a collection folder which you can view and tweak to see if it the photo you want to use, From there you can export a copy and work on it in adobe the original image from the camera stays original.

I believe that there's actually a tutorial on Workflow by Bear_music in the tutorials section of DPC.

I found it helpful.

So, I am gathering that I should not plug my USB into my computer and move all of the pictures automatically into the Photoshop Organizer. Am I correct in that? Not to be a pain but I never put that Nikon picture project software on the computer since I take every photo I take straight into Photoshop (saved in organized folders on my external drive - not under Photoshop -which is on the C drive) and I also prefer to plug in the USB - call me anal, but I don't want to damage my flashcard door by opening it all the time and I don't want to over expose my flashcard to dust by popping it in and out. Soooo... I guess it would be best to try saving everything to the files without using Photoshop to import them?

Ok, I'm calling you anal, but ONLY because you told me to... :)

Uhh. I wouldn't worry about the dust issue.

I've got cards that I've been using in and out of various devices including an MP3 player, two PDA's, Multiple other people's PDA's, PCMCIA adaptors, USB adaptors, Hard drive readers, three owned digital cameras, quite a number of other digital cameras for testing, been in my mouth, dropped on the floor, been flung out into the middle of a crowd of people walking all over them by being in a PDA that was dropped from chest height without being properly removed, sat on magnets, lived in pockets unprotected, scratched with keys, sat in wet pockets soaked by torrential rain from typhoons, been through extreme changes in temperature.... After 3 years, I still use every single one of my cards and none of them have given me troubles in any way. Most look nearly new too.

Getting the point yet?

As for the door, well, it is a weatherproofed D200. Even if it did break off after 500000 actuations, it probably wouldn't cost much to replace. I would guess that the plastic door would break without damaging the magnesium alloy frame too..

Get the card reader. Use it. Love it. They rock socks. :)
