I finally won my first ribbon after 80 entries. I have taken the time to look back at my pictures and my scores and have rated my improvement. I broke down my 80 entries into units of 10 and took the average scores I received in the contests for each unit. Here are my totals starting from my earliest entries up to the most recent 10.
1)4.818
2)4.926
3)5.458
4)5.157
5)5.739
6)5.459
7)5.512
8)5.739
The point is that I can not only see the improvement I have made by looking at my earlier pictures compared to my more recent ones, but that improvement can be quantified. What I am trying to say is that DP Challenge offers for anyone who is willing to learn, the opportunity to be able to substantially improve their photographic skills. I can see by the quality of work that many of the contestants exhibit that I still have alot to learn, but that is the fun of it. So, if your scores are not as good as you would like, don't get discouraged, get encouraged. If I can do it, so can you! :)

I really enjoy looking at other photographers and seeing their progression over time here at DPC. Congrats on your ribbon, but more importantly congrats on improving your photography skills. :)

While your improvement in your photographic skills is admirable, I'm more impressed with your tenacity. Sticking with something like this (that can be *so* discouraging at times) is really inspirational. Hooray for you!

i'm always trying to out-do myself and better my scores here, so with that in mind...

another way to congratulate yourself might be to look at the fact that even though you now have a ribbon, it's still only your third-highest rated image. to me, this indicates that you've taken excellent shots before...you've just been "outdone" by others.

just because this one image got a ribbon doesn't mean it's your best yet, IMO.

for me, my one ribbon is my highest-rated image. i'm replacing shots in my top 5, but i see bumping that top image off as my true challenge. whether or not it earns a ribbon when it does that is another topic entirely.

in any case, congrats on placing.

I believe most people know when they have a good photo to post. I will not now just post a photo just because there is a challenge going. I generally take photos for all the challenges and go to some lenghts to obtain these shots, sometimes travelling some distance and spending both time and money. However if i am not pleased with the results then i dont post them.

Thanks for saying this, It took you a year and lots of hard work but you stuck with it. I've been at DPC since June this year and digital since December'02 no ribbons yet, but I'm gonna keep on submitting, keep on trying, and keep on learning. One of the proudest moments I've had here is when someone first gave me a Favorite Photo stat. If I could make that one person feel something special it was worth all the one votes in the world(and aren't there a lot of those?)

I agree with what you all say. The bottom line is that its fun to make challenges for ourselves, whether it be to get a ribbon or merely to improve our scores over time. The satisfaction is seeing ourselves achieve our goals, but not to make the goals insurmountable.
