I like to use an A4 sized foil and white piece of card board as a bounce for my flash. You can use either side to bounce off soft with white or hard with the foil.

This I attach to a bracket made from 2 old Norman flash brackets that were kicking around in my kit box for years,

Becausue of the flexiblility of the bracket you can move the board up down back forward and change the angle so you can put the bounced flash to where you want it.

Allthough this was not shot this way the effect is the same. I will post one done with this gadget as soon as ive found one.

New pictures

I used foil reflectors and direct sun when I shot this swimwear picture in Wester Australia.

Sounds like a good cheap alternative....could you post a pic of your setup?

You know what a flash bracket looks like. Instead of putting the flash on the bracket I clamp an A4 piece of cardboard with kitchen foil glued onto it. Flash goes on hot shoe as normal but pointed up to bounce of the foiled board.

Next time I use it ill take a picture for you.

Forgive me here, Bruce, but this pic is just too doggone dark for a swimwear pic. Makes me feel like she's running from a storm or a mass murderer. Is that intentional?

Good for a movie ad, but swimwear???

Please look at it for its athetic merits. The shot was used quite differently and in colour in the clients publication.

When im shooting for my clients I try and shoot from different perspectives, artistic not literal) what my client needs as in for a catalogue or for an advert also from the point of view of an editorial, which I will use in my portfolio. Which will show my style of photography more closely. This can only be done when time restraints are not apparent when shoting.

Thanks for the comments and your observations. I understand your reason.

Perhaps I should change the title from swimwear picture to girl on beach with moody clouds. If you had been at this shoot you would have been aware of the stresses and conditions. The atmospher of this shot reflects how I was feeling. I had 400 shots to do in 8 days. Weather was at times absolutly terrible... :-) but I dont want to complain.. LOL

Rules rules rules::::::::::::

You need to be aware of the rules that others believe in to make great pictures, then break the rules to make your pictures unique and your own. This is what I do.

Pictures are not always looked at as just the picture on its own. I will often have to account for designers moods, creative needs, layouts, text, titles, pictures being used on magazine spreads and still looking blanced etc etc, also a photographers own style and his or her asthetic imput are an important part of making your work stand out from every one elses.

These are some good reasons to break the rules.

There are no rules, just good or bad choices, making more good choices will make you a great photographer.

Has any one else got any home made gadgets that they use for flash when their shooting.

I love to use reflectors to bounce light. both with hand held plash guns and on camera speed lights.

Share your tips.

I often use my car's windshield reflector (will post a pic of this later for those curious), or a white dinner plate for indoor shots.

Yeah - I have a couple of foam core attachments which velcro to my flashes. Point the flashes up and the gadgets bounce the light forward... nice diffused light.

Can't put a pic of the results up at the moment though as It is too close to a current challenge entry...

for those who still haven't gotten a proper flash yet, a ping pong ball diffuser over the popup flash is actually not too bad

I use 2 old Norman flash brackets doctored to make an arm which I clamp a piece of foam board to to use as a bounce.. I put kitchen foil on one side for when I want harsh light and use plain white on the other side when I want soft light. Works a treat.

Bruce

Ill did out a shot and post it.
