Hey everyone--

Mick (micknewton) and I have been talking a little about getting another GTG going for this summer, anyone up for it? Any suggestions about when or where? I'm free pretty much the rest of the summer (it's good to be young and irresponsible sometimes =) so what do everyone else's schedules look like? Does another DPC OR GTG sound possible?

Sounds fun to me... but I'm pretty booked the rest of the summer.

Every weekend for me is already scheduled up until September 16.!

I might be able to make either August 12 or 13th -- but not both. I need to verify which day I already have on the schedule. So it would be pretty lucky if that day met everybody else's availability too.

Where's it going to be??

I *may* be able to make a 12th or 13th--as far as where it's going to happen, I haven't a clue yet. =)

Where do you wanna go?

So I can make it to a GTG on the 12th.

Where? hmm.....

There's always the Gorge I suppose... Waterfalls, kite-boarders, windsurfers, Stonehenge, etc.

The Japanese Gardens in Washington Park maybe? Or the zoo?

Smith Rock would be a good place for some climber shots and some rugged landscapes. I've been saying I'm going to get over there, but haven't made it with the camera yet. I'd definitely be up for Smith Rock.

Any other ideas??

Brian

The 12th would work for me, I think. How bout anyone else?

They don't allow tripods at the Japanese Gardens...

But yeah. I don't have any other ideas. So far it's looking like whatever you wanna do, Brian. =)

I've PM'd the usual OR crew, but nobody's checking their email...

Well... I think I'd really like to go over to Smith Rock. If we did that, I'd probably head over Friday afternoon to camp there. I think some first-light shots would be good. Then try for some climber shots later in the day.

Anyone interested in such a trip?

Sounds like fun to me, as long as I don't have to dangle on a rope.

I will again come if I can, which doesn't seem to be often. Closer to portland would make it much easier actually and I would think there was a high liklihood I could make it then.

Awww, why not? I was hoping for some shots of you dangling on the end of a rope. Now you've got me all disappointed...
No sense of adventure, that's your problem, Mick. =)

That's the problem with you kids nowadays. You have no patience. Give it time. It may happen yet. You're probably not the only one that would like to see me swinging at the end of a rope.

What makes you say that? Just because I don't feel any need to prove that the law of gravity is still in effect doesn’t mean that I’m not adventurous. Come to the Bahamas and go diving with us some time. Now that's real adventure, and fun!

...and no, I'm not buying your ticket. :D

I should be able to make it the 12th. Will have to ask to get it off from work, but that shouldn't be a problem. Just a matter of location now?
Everybody is welcome to come to Cannon Beach again, and we've got open beds if people need a place to stay.
A zoo sounds fun, I've only being photographing in a zoo once.

I didn't get a pm, or an email, just letting you know.

That'd be cool...if I can borrow Mick's telephoto :D
Driving time would be quite a bit for me though.

There is still a fairly serious forest fire burning in the Sister's area, and depending on the wind it could be very smokey in the Redmond and Smith Rock area. Not to mention there is a lot of traffic over there of fire equipment and people with trucks and trailers that where evacuated and allowed to come back and may have to leave again. They don't expect the fire to be out for some time... usually they get them contained but it takes the first rains to really put them out.

Just an FYI, if you go to the zoo in Portland (not sure if there any other zoos in Oregon) they have the new butterfly exhibit and they are gorgeous. You'll want to go when its a bit warmer out so they are more active. I think it only costs $2.00 extra (on top of the entrance fee) to get a ticket to go inside unless you have a membership then its only $1.00.

Strange you should ask that question. It just so happens that my specialty is "Something Yummy":-)
Of course, it we go to the zoo, they frown on someone else cooking there. Worries the animals.
The butterfly exhibit has special hours for photographers only, so might check that first.

If we go to the zoo, I am a patron and can get a number of people (2-4 or something) in free, including the butterfly exhibit. I actually think it's better to go when it's cooler because it is easier to take pictures of them when they are still.

Oop good point.

I went simply as an observer last time and that's what the lady told me, so yes, early to mid morning might be better so you won't have them fluttering all over the place.

:D

BUMP!
Is it the general consensus that we'll meet at the Portland Zoo on Saturday, August 12th?
And if this is the case, what would be a good meeting time?

We saw that while driving back last Thursday (July 27th) and it looked huge!...but I have to say what an absolutely gorgeous, beautiful, hot drive! :)

Edit to Add: Just curious...I hear (saw online) that there is a huge Grotto in the Portland area and it looks like it has some awesome statues and garden area...that may be an idea?

PS: I'm talking about the The Grotto as opposed to the Oregon Grotto
