I'd like to see ONE challenge where the scores only (not comments) are turned off to see first if it changes the way someone would vote a photo and secondly to see if people would stop crying about a low scoring photo that probably deserves a low score.

i think that would just postpone the whining to the day the challenge ends and the scores are shown. then the forums would be bombarded and it would get nasty. but I do like the idea as long as its understood that whining will always ensue. its inevitable. we all put so much of ourselves into these pictures. its hard not to be hurt sometimes.

I think people, knowing what score they are getting, are apt to vote lower (than their own score) any image they think doesn't meet their own image's quality. So hiding the scores would free people to vote as they see the image.

I like the idea.

I'd second (or third) that.

Hopefully not to hijack your thread, but I'd also like to see a "comments only" challenge once and a while where there is actually no score given, no winner, just comments.

While I understand what you're getting at, I have to ask - what's the point of a challenge if there is no voting and no winner? Wouldn't that be more of an exhibition or something?

I think that if someone want`s comments on their pictures witout a score, he(or she) can always add photos to their portfolios and ask for comments...

A suspense challenge (categorically speaking) ... yes, I loves the idea of no scores, no comments, no nuthin. At least no scores.

It still could be challenge/themed, and the emphasis would be on learning from comments rather than winning. Why must there be a winner?

I just suggested it because I wanted to see what would happen if we took the emphasis from scoring and winning and emphasized commenting/learning.

I don't disagree that a focus on learning is a good thing. However, as I see it, that's what the forums are for. There are a number of Learning/Commenting threads at any given time, where the focus is solely on learning and discussion.

The challenges are, by nature, competetive. People most often enter to see how well they rate and without a score, the whole concept of a challenge beceomes pointless. I think that you would find that entries would drop quite low for a scoreless challenge - which is sort of an oxymoron.

Well, how about the same idea with different spin. four stages:
1. Upload images for a challenge.
2. Comment only stage.
3. Members are allowed to edit the photo or retake a photo.
4. Voting stage

I think this will enable younger members to learn by fixing what is broke and seeing the results. Perhaps if one does this in a 'round robin' by limiting the number of entries to 50 or 100. Entrants may not comment or vote.

How about you look at all the photos in the challenge... then vote for ONE only .. No scores.. no comments

That's a very cool way to do it!

This would be an excellent challenge idea for the kids on the site (under 15 or 18)

But this would exclude people like myself who has only recently been bitten by the photography bug and photography isn't something that really needs categorising by age. Perhaps I should have choosen a different word than younger. Perhaps the right word would be 'less experienced' or 'photographically challenged'.

I like the idea of having a kids only challenge tho.

If you aren't going to show results and you should hide both comments and scores until the end of the challenge.

It is a good idea, especially because there are a lot of people out there that obsessively check their scores and comments . . . maybe people could get some sleep and live their lives.

It would also be a nice break from people bitching over scores. Always the voter's fault. I take 100% responsibility for my photos and everybody should.

You'd find that people would still bitch about something. Instead of votes, it would be comments, lack of comments, the inability to see either, whatever. Don't think you can escape this one.

As for obsessively checking my score, that's my business, and you don't have any right to limit it, thank you very much ;-)

Damn, you made me feel a little bit like "Big Brother" there. Why am I online now? Checking my score for the 10th time today. Can we start a SCA? Score Checkers Anonymous. I need a sponsor, asap!

I quite like the idea of checking my score 10+ times a day. Specially on the first day or 2 of voting. Starting at 3.8 and shouting at it to go up. Akin to watching a worldcup final. :)

10+ times a day?

Don't you mean something more like 10+ times an hour? (sometimes even 10+ times in a single minute, just to catch the hit-and-run voter)

My name is David and I check my scores. :-)

P.S.
I still like the idea of having one challenge (as an experiment) with scores turned off until the end - Turning off *my* update button isn't sufficient. This experiement isn't just to see how I react, it's to see how the "masses" react.

I suggested this before in this thread they thought I was mad ?

I still like the idea.

As a member of the masses, I'd probably react with a nervous breakdown. My life is so boring that my score is usually the most thrilling thing in my day - even when it's only a 4! :-)

I'll fourth that

I do believe that participants own score affects how they vote.

This would be great! But not for kids (there are some kids than are better than the old ones) but for people with an average score under 5 or something... This could be a great help for some of us that maybe with a little help could learn, and then get scores with the corrected picture... I like it!

I think turning off the scores for the duration of the voting is a great idea. No current challenge scores threads to view either. Sounds refreshing...and mysterious. Let's do it!
Of course I only want it for one experimental challenge.
The update button is too much a part of dpc to change permanently.
