No offence - and this is just my opinion - but why not donate all proceeds from commemorative prints? At least during September anyway.

Personally, I think a more palatable way of honouring this tragedy rather than mass flag-waving is through shots like these:

I do think that dsa157's shot is a very tasteful 'banner' shot.

Just FYI, I AM making donations to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund for all of my patriotic prints sold. So far, I've donated $15.

Why does there have to be a "better" way of doing something like remembering? I am sure nearly every American (and many from other places too) has a personal tale to tell from that tragic day. What is wrong with honoring the strength of our coutry through patriotic images? What is wrong with honoring those who fight now to protect our future at the same time we honor those who fought and died in the past?

I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't bother with this kind of response, but I cannot seem to help myself.

I'm in. I'll be donating sales from my photo (that Jon so kindly posted below) to a charity this month. I'll go and put a message on the shot right now :) Great idea, Jon.

I'll also be happy to put links to other photos that will donate to charity in my blurp for the photo, plus I'll put a message out at the bulletin board at work - PM if you are donating all proceeds from your photo to charity this month.

This flag hung in an abandoned carpark for a year in the Texas sun after Sept 11th. I had wanted to photograph it
for a while as the fading symbolised, to me, some of the fading nationalism in the country. (Which I see as a good thing). Commemorating the dead is a worthy thing to do, but nothing much good comes from rampant nationalism. I realise I probably have a different view on this than many people who were born in the US and it no doubt gives me an unusual perspective, being an immigrant.

The colours in the flag are unmanipulated.

This is a fabulous idea! I have a whole roll of shots of the WTC that I took the week before everything happened. I will make every effort to post them for sale for charity. What a great idea!

In the meantime, I'll post this shot that I took last weekend. It's small because I was going to use it for a demo in class today. I'll post a larger version later. No flags, but I think it's appropriate.

Here are a couple I've shot... nothing truly amazing, but I personally find them stirring.

From my grandfather's funeral.

There's nothing wrong with it but, for non-Americans, a multitude of Stars'n'Stripes does get tedious, if not utterly gratuitous - and how does a shot of the SSB communicate anything about 9/11? All it really says is 'God Bless America'. It's impersonal and exclusive.

Other nationalities suffered losses on that day too (and this is an international site) so I was merely suggesting a more universal, aesthetically pleasing approach by using shots that feature less national bias and more opportunity for reflection.

I'm still kinda new to the DPChallenge, but i just wanna say that i think it's wonderful that so many people on this site alone wanna do something to remember those who lost their lives and those left to carry on after the 9/11 attacks. As a mother of 2 boys, it made me see just how more preciouse life really is because you never know when your number is going to be picked. Live every day to the fullest and be happy doing it. If i knew how to post a picture i would do it. I just wanted to say that i think this is a wonderful that is being done on this site and that it should not be turned into a racial issue. All races suffered a great loss on that terrible day, lets pull together as one big family to remember them ALL. Sorry, that's just my opinion.
