I don't know anything about starting a photography business, but since you're rather young make sure you have a very solid portfolio. That will shut up anyone who doesn't think you know what you're doing... Just my 2 cents.

I agree... First and foremost.... build your portfolio!!! I am ramping up on my own business adventure and I'm shooting for free right now to build my portfolio (exchange of services). Once you've done that, build a website so that others can view your work... THEN consider advertising.

I'm looking to do the same thing and am shooting for free/little at the moment purely to build up a portfolio that show I can produce the required results!

Have thought about advertising, though not costed anything at present...

There is nothing wrong with a 16 yr olds eye, if its good its good. Sounds to me like your a natural, and probably an elite photographer.

However, there are always things to learn, and this may be the perfect time for you to seek those priceless questions. Dont misunderstand me please, I am not saying don't do it. I am just saying the burden of adding money into the equation can make great things bad in a hurry.

Stay passionate, and love what you do. Those marketing questions you have will be answered, but it may take time. Photography is a tough business, staying true to what you do may be the real lesson, and a lesson alot of photographers have not yet learned, including me 28+.

For advertising, check service directories in the newspapers. Take a small ad out for 30 days, shouldn't be too much, under $200 depending on where you live. If you use a newspaper, make sure your ad is in for at least 2 weeks at a time otherwise you will waste money and not get any calls. Also check craigslist.org where you can respond to people looking for photogs.

Word of mouth is the best and cheapest. Get one job done well and it could lead to 4 more of their friends.

I agree, word of mouth is the cheapest way, I took photos of some executives a year ago, from them I've gotten around 7 jobs including a wedding. Also tell friends that you can do senior portraits cheaper then "Jostens" or whoever takes the senior pics at your school. So far no one has mentioned my age, they just care about the final result. BTW I have found that doing all this requires lots of patience! Good Luck ;)
