hey fellas, i don't know whats going on with my lens. I took it out to use the other day and it wouldn't focus it was as if any picture it took was blurred even if i try to manually focus it wouldn't do it. The lens doesn't look unusually dirty or anything. Is it a throw away or is there a way to save it. any suggestions? Its a canon 100-300 usm. and i'm using it on a 350D. Appreciate any help. thanks

Wow. Tough deal man! Got a warranty?

There are a number of things you can do... By your description, it sounds like your lens is giving you results that are badly out of focus and this is not a 'fine tuning' issue...

#1. clean the contacts of the lens and the body where the lens meets the body...

#2 pull the lens off the body and see if you can get the lens to focus on anything by setting it at it's widest and sticking your eye at around the same place as the sensor would be, moving the focus back and forth...

Try again with the lens at full zoom...

If nothing changes, try moving the lens back and forth away from your eye and closer to see if you can find where it is focusing...

Once you find that, keep your head very still and move the manual focus ring back and forth...

If it doesn't change, there's probably a mechanical failure of some sort that needs attention by a technician.

If the manual focus ring is changing things, then do some more testing...

Set the lens to wide angle at f/16 or f/22 and take a picture of something nearby. Then take a picture of something 5 feet away, 10 feet away, 50 feet away, 200 feet away and something very distant.

Should be able to get something in focus...

Post some samples too...
