Hi. Anyone have any suggestions for a new lens for a 300d? I'm looking for something in the range of 18-130'ish zoom (as fast as I can get in this price range). I'd like to try to stay around $500.

If you have anything like that you'd like to get rid of you could email me...

Thanks!

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8...awesome lens, perfect for that price range. You'll love it. :)

Add a 1.4 teleconvertor too for added coverage.

What sort of shots are you looking to take?

I'd suggest a Nikon or Sigma 105mm Macro for close up and portrait shots.

that one looks nice bandit... but I'd rather not go prime now. I'd like to find something that has some zoom. I'll check out the tamron that laurielblack suggests. I've been tryin to decide on a teleconvertor too faidoi. Zoom, macro, fast... I may be askin too much for one lens huh (at least in that price)?

Fast lens + tele convertor = unbeatable combo.

Hmmm, ok, it's twice the price, but if you bought a 24-105L, you'd never need another lens in the range. Yes, it's f/4, but I've never missed the extra speed. I love a lens that you can shoot at any combination of aperture and zoom and not worry that you are losing sharpness.

That's the one I've been drooling over...

What does the teleconverter add to the aperture? I think I remember hearing that it doubles it?

1.4=1 f-stop
2.0 = 2 f-stop

thus a faster lens is a bettr choice for tele-convertor.

Also, Canon's 'consumer' cameras (20/30D, 350D, possibly 5D also) will refuse to autofocus if the lens's max aperture is smaller than 5.6. So if you use a 2x TC on a 2.8 lens it'll still work, but not on a 4.0 lens or something.

The Tamron is really good, I like mine a lot, but it's not very wide. If you find yourself wanting to shoot wide, you might want to get something in the 18-50 range instead. If you shoot tight compositions, it's a good range with a crop sensor, but at it's widest it's basically a normal lens and not wide angle.
