Its time for me to order magazine subscriptions from my daughters school. Any recommendations on a good photography magazine I can subscribe to? I already receive Backpacker and Arizona Highways. I love their photography, but that isn't what their magazines are about.

Popular Photography has always been a good choice for me...
They don't just cater to digital, though, if that is what you are looking for. Outdoor Photographer is good as well. American Photo is interesting, but a little 'artsy'.
When I go to the news stand, there are tons of digital specific magazines. They are either geared towards rank ameteurs, with most of the content about camera reviews (point and shoot typically). I have seen some really great digital magazines that I can learn from, but they all seem to be out of the UK. US subsription is very expensive!
Try heading to a Barnes and Noble or Borders bookstore (or other place with an extensive magazine collection). Take a look at a few and see what captures your attention. One will probably stand out more than the others to you...

The best photography magazines I've come across are from the UK but one North American mag that is pretty good is Photo Life.

Good Photo magazine ( being blunt, skipping the 'advertising' magazine or the 'PC' ones )

US :
- nature photographer (trimester)
- photo life

UK
- practical photography
- photography monthly

France :
- Reponses photos
- Chasseur d image

I have the pop photo and utdoor photographer, one good article sometimes, half is advertizing, paper is very very bad quality. I subscribed only because it's 1$.

Buy one of the UK one .. and you will understand.
Go figure why europeans can do good ones and not US ! (not really asking ;-) )

I just picked up a new magazine that premiered this month. Digital Photo Pro. Published 6 times a year, and bills itself as " the guide to advanced technology and creativity" I really dig the first issue.

Practical Photography (UK Edition) is good, about $69 to subscribe from the US though.

Lenswork is actually about the creative process of photography and is more interesting.

American Photo is all fashion and advertising photography, very little art.

Camera Arts looked interesting.

Most of the rest, particularly the advertising driven or technique driven magazines, like popular photography and imaging or any of the digital photo ones are a waste of time. You can get more comprehensive and more up to date info on the internet and the quality of articles is usually rubbish. Magazines like shutterbug are just mail order catalogs with some advertising special features thrown in as an excuse for articles. There is a reason the subscriptions are so cheap its all paid for by the advertisers - and it shows.

Blind Spot is a fantastic Photographic Arts Magazine. Picture is also really good and available internationally.

My favorite is "Digital Photography Made Easy". They also come out with a compiliation every so often. Currently Vol. 4?.

Most of the good digital photography magazines are the ones from the U.K. The prices on these mags at the newstand ranges from $10.00 on up here in the U.S., but if you have the patience I noticed that a lot of them are collected into a book size format. Most of the U.K. ones also include software tryouts, plug-ins for photoshop, and how-to videos.

There's also really good Photoshop and Web Creating how-to magazines from the U.K. they also include a lot of goodies but expensive.

Check your newstands or bookstores and you will find a lot of magazines on non-digital photography that you can use for ideas and technics.

Thanks All. I decided to try Outdoor Photographer. After perusing OP for a year perhaps I'll have a better idea what I'm looking for in a photo magazine. Or, maybe I'll use the next year to brush up on real english so I can enjoy one of the premier magazines from the UK.

I just picked up a copy of "practical photography" at barnes and nobel and i love it. It is very different from any here in the US. But does anyone know where to get a subscription besides Amazon for $120?

Look in the magazine - you'll probably find a subscription code to get it for about 50UKP per year. I order it from the publishers website for that amount, plus usually a free bag/ monopod.

For photography interests:
Outdoor Photographer....
Backpacker too :)
National geographic (dont' subscribe to it, just buy it occasionally)
Vogue (my fiance' subscribes to it -- i just read it :) lots of great looking photographs, i tend to look at the outdoor shots though, particularly the ads with backlighting/fill flash)

Good Digital Imaging Mags.are PC Photo, Digital Photographer, eDIGITAL PHOTO and a new one for all the pros out there, DIGITAL PHOTO PRO. These magazines are all excellent, with lots of how to articles.
Hope this help.

paganini, you beat me too it. National Geographic is by far where i get the most inspiration for shots. There is such a wide range of subjects covered (from urban, to nature, to portraits). National Geo. has tons of pics, and not alot of "filler" like mainstream photo mags.

Scrum8...you have great taste in mags. You now will be subscribed to my two favorite (and only subscriptions). OP and BP.
Been on any interesting pack trips this summer? I am starting to plan a trip down to the SE UT area around the first or last of Oct. Love that area, and "getting lost" in the canyons for days. Check the P4A link below and the nature button for some from past years, if ya like.
