My trip has been confirmed. I will be in NY (Elisabeth NJ actually) over the week end. While there I plan on doing almost ALL photography, all the time. I also plan on visiting the MECCA (BHPhoto) on Sunday (learned my lesson last time trying to go at 3pm on Friday. DAMN!).

I have a few questions:

- Should I be affraid to bring my good gear on such a busy holiday weekend? I have a 5D (with grip) along with an arsenal of lenses. I don't plan on carying them ALL all the time, but surely a long zoom, and a couple of shorter lenses, in a sling bag. I'm just affraid that the large camera with long lens might just attract too much attention in the busy streets. I can use my 10D instead. I'd like some thoughts from locals or others that have gone.

I will be shopping at BH but some other NY camera stores have better pricing. Will BH price match? I've seen good pricing online from 47th St. Photo. Do they have a retail store? If so, where is it? I can't find that info on their site. Also, what is the thought on those camera stores all over town? You know the ones I mean. Would you buy form them?

If anybody wants to meet up with me while I'm there, I'd be more than happy to try to meet up. I'll be there from Sat-Mon.

Thanks in advance for the info.

ok I would stay away from those little camera stores, they just love tourist. They try so sell you crap you dont need or its used equipment. They are also known for going out of business and then just opening them up again to lure people in that see the going out of business sale signs.

Ok so I can meetup with you and show you some places to shoot I may have a photo shoot to do early on sunday but I am free this weekend on saturday........ and yes :-) I am off on monday and tuesday.

For 47st photo I have read that when you order stuff sometimes they never have it in stock and I dont think they have a store.

I got used to walking the Manhattan streets alone with my DSLR. Ventured to both rivers, down 9th Ave. to B&H, and a friend and I through the park and up into Harlem as far as Columbia U. and Tom's Restaurant (Seinfeld). No one bothers you. It's such a nice friendly place (although B&H can be quite intimidating).

I'll be there the following week. I'm not worried about carrying my camera around. I'm going to a White Sox v. Yankees game in the Bronx and wondering if I'll get beat up when I wear my White Sox apparel!!!!

Long lenses get a lot of attention and can be intimidating to people on the street but are perfect for Central Park and other heavily photographed places. If you use serious equipment where there are no other photographers you will stand out more.

I would say bring only what you really, really need. Avoid the leses that you most likely won't leave your bag.

J&R is a great store at around the same price range as B&H but not half a big or stocked. Adorama is a cool store and has a good deal of used stuff that might be worth a look. Stick with B&H...you really can't do much better anywhere else.

Steve, I just wanted to say that I really love that photo of Times Square with the FE lens. I did not own a fish eye last time I was there. If I did, I probably would have taken that shot. Amazing!

BTW, you look real good for 85. LOL!

That's great, thanks for the info on the store. That's what I thought about those little stores all around.

If we can get a little GTG happening that'd be cool. I'll probably be arriving either Saturday afternoon, or possibly earlier.

I'll keep checking back here to see if anything develops.
