I will be staying at Niagra Falls on my way to NYC and wanted to get some good shots of the falls. I have heard the Canadian side has the best view, is that true? What are the details about getting through the border, what kind of documents do I need to have. My GF does not have a passport, will a license work or does she need a birth cert.?

Where is there a decently cheap B&B? Would it be better to stay at Niagra on the Lake? Is Niagra on the Lake worth driving to or should I concentrate my time on the Falls?

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks

Canadian side is good. Table rock standard area. Birth cert and picture Id like a licence.. Niagara on the lake is a huge torist town, lots of fudge shops etc cool place

I'm in Buffalo, just south of the falls. When I cross the border they usually just ask for a drivers licence, but I always carry an original birth certificate as well. It isn't a problem really, but I seem to have bad luck catching random car searches. Nothing to fear though, it usually just takes five minutes if they stop you.

The Canadian side definately has a beter view of the falls themselves, but the state park on the American side is highly underrated. There are great views to be found. Don't miss the three sisters islands off of goat island. It's by the very small parking lot(6 or 8 parking spaces) on goat island.

I cant really say too much about Niagara-on-the-Lake but if you have time (and lots of energy) consider a hike through the gourge downriver of the falls. Park at Whirlpool State park and (facing the river) follow the path to your right. There will be a LONG stone staircase on your left eventually, leading down to the river. Take your time coming back up!

Hope this helps a little.

I've always been a fan of the Canadian side, too. I'm not even sure I've ever seen the falls from the American side!

We've never had much of any trouble at the border. We always bring birth certificates along just in case, but the crossing usually consists of "What is your nationality? Where are you going? How long are you staying? Have a lovely time."

Canadian side has better view of the main waterfall. On American side you can stand right over the smaller waterfall.

I suggest you see both sides but Canadian is a must.

my shots from there...

Just an interesting tidbit, because it's probably the right time to act on this instead of waiting until it's too late.

Starting in 2007 you will need an honest to goodness passport to pass between Canada and the US.

I have seen both sides and there are interesting vistas from both. Considering that it costs nothing to cross the bridge, I would suggest you go to both side. If you get a chance, do take photos at night when the falls are lit up....quite nice.

Someone suggested Niagra on the Lake... do visit if you get a chance... it is quite quaint.

I have been to Niagara-on-the-Lake several times. Peach festival, honeymoon stopover, etc. When the flowers are out, it is magnificent.

There is a boulevard with rows of flowers on the ground and every lightpost, in the center and the two street curbs.

Great English/Victorian and Irish style, and wineries galore nearby, many art and specialty stores/shops, great hotels, carriage rides, sailboats, and more.

Canadian side is far better for a view. For great shots, be sure to ride the Maid of the Mist. :)

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions. I have to apologize for the confusion...I have already taken my trip. I went during the week of July 4th. Check out the pics that I managed to get here:
