A friend of mine has Photoshop 4.0 and I'm wondering if I can just download the program to my computer and use it without having the disc.

using a pirated free version is not the way to go.

It's not pirated, a friend of mine has this program and I was wondering if I could use it without the disc.

It should work without the disc. Not so sure what difference it makes that it is free or pirated. If it works, Use It afterall that version is like 8-10 years old already You are not going to Break Adobe's Bank by using it.

Well if he hasn't uninstalled it from his computer then you are breaking a law.

I was just stating that that shouldn't be ignored here. It is just like someone stealing your photos.

Not saying you are doing it just letting you know. IT is not a good idea if he hasn't uninstalled it from his computer.

Edited because i thought of something else to say...

It is decent of you to throw out a heads-up but for a title that 5 versions back in time i dont think anyone would be the wiser.

I just paid 700 dollars for Photoshop CS2 about 3 months ago. If anyone is getting ripped off It is us people who have to pay outlandish prices for a software that claims to be updated each new version but other than a few tweaks to the interface nothing really changes. especially the high price.

Some will say. It wouldnt cost so much if people didnt pirate it. Well alot of people wouldnt prirate the software if it wasn't so exspensive in the first place.

That sounds like one of my favorite quotes from my sister, who once told my parents "If you trusted me more, I wouldn't have to lie so much!"

That's like saying that buying a 72 inch plasma screen TV from the back of a van at the local gas station for 200 bucks is OK... After all, if they didn't charge 8000 bucks for one you'd already have one!

Oh yeah, and downloading music for free is OK too!

So If I have someone that wants to buy this photo for $700

Then it is ok for me to sell it and keep all the money?

I'm not saying pirating software is okay, but that analogy does not work so well. There is a huge difference between buying a gigantic plasma television for a couple hundred bucks and expecting photo editing software not to cost over five hundred dollars. With the TV, the cost of materials probably greatly exceeds 200$, whereas with computer software you are distributing information. Instructions, really, nothing more. Sure there is a huge development cost (though one wonders, as has been mentioned in this thread already, successive iterations of photoshop are only marginal improvements over older versions). But even if it costs a lot to make the program initially, once that investment is made duplicating the "product" has NO cost for the person selling it to you. Prices for high-end software are unrealistically bloated.

That's better than "I always tell some version of the truth!"

In that case someone wanted to spend $700, not that you said s/he can only have it for $700. So yeah, you keep the money.

To answer your original question. No you don't need the disc to run the program. Just to install it. But if he hasn't removed it from his system that is illeagle. Now are the software police going to be crashing in your house tomorrow? No probably not. But as far as ethics go is it right?

But you still bought it. So why are you bitching. If you don't like the price don't buy it.

This remionds me of when people that bitch about how much athletes make. But yet they are wearing a Team shirt and hat and go to many games. If you don't agree with something then don't support it.

To answer the original post: Yes, it should run without any problems. Once installed PS never asks for disks.

PS4 isn't exactly a great piece of software, compared to even 5.5, but it will get the job done. I can't remember, but I think PS4 was out in the Windows 3.x or 95 days. It might not install or run on an XP system.

Edit: Now, may be a good time to mention that the Gimp is a damn good piece of software and is free. Definitely better than PS4.

and at this point in time gimp will have more features than ps4.0
& it's free ...

I'd say that in this case, a very old version of PS, that it's more like buying a second-hand tv. You get a tv though you can't afford a new one, but the manufacturer doesn't make anything from the sale.

I really do not see anything wrong with a friend giving another friend software that is nearly a decade old.

Too many people on this site are way to fussy about rules and regulations. I mean when you take a crap is it manditory that it stink ? loosin up people.

how many people on this site could provide proof of purchase for every software title they have on their computer right now?

like i said i dont think it is a big deal. If it were a brand new copy of adobe then i would agree with everyone to an extent. but like i said, we are talking about an out of date version of this software, It is like Windows 95 there are thousands of copies laying around in dust piles all over the world. Does anyone care about them anymore. NO!
