Hello all,

I am currently shooting with a Nikon d70. I need to upgrade as I am now shooting in studio and need a more professional camera. I am torn between going ot Canon or staying with Nikon. Nikon cameras are more user friendly, and the D200 competes with the 5d up to 400 ISO. I shoot in clubs alot and know the canon cameras are better at higher ISOs and low light, however the Nikon AF is better in low light. I was thinking of getting a 20d or 30d. Based on my cash flow, I am looking at the 20D, 30D or D200. There are so many pros and cons. Nikon has a more durable and weather protected body. My other concern is that Canon will be releasing a 40d soon. Can you guys please help me decide.....?

Thank you

The d200 is at least twice the camera the 30d claims to be.

That being said...if you're doing 'studio' work, where is it that the d70 is falling short? The quality will be in your lighting...the d70 is more than capable. I just don't want to see you dish out 1500 bucks and have the same problem you started with.

Hi Scott,
I have shot with 4x5, 2.25 and 35 film and digital in a studio enviroment. My D70 is without a doubt the best piece of equipment I've ever owned. That's not to say that my other hardware wasn't good, but over all, the D70 rules. Deapee has a good point. I believe you should handle the due dilligence of lighting. Quality of strobes, your ability to light properly, proper ISO [I never shoot greater than ISO 200, if I need more speed, I add more light] all lend to studio work. Also, what color is your shooting space and is there strong available light? These two elements will provide a ton of inconsistant results. My studio is painted a dark flat brown, the ceiling is flat black and the outside light stays outside via covered windows.
I checked out your images, good work.
That's my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Good luck,

I shoot D70 and D2X in studio and for my money... the D70 does OK...
IF extreme detail is not what you are after that is what the D2X is for

It does have problems with hair detail in portraits (even more apparent with redheads for some reason)and the 200 asa (sorry ISO) tends to bug me a little because of flash duration ... but outside of that it does well.

A D200 would be a good upgrade IMHO for the club shots and the like

When you get into the high ISOs and available light the noise is a little hard to handle.
