I'm having a problem, which I've been having for quite a while. Before anyone slates Microsoft, yes I already use FireFox and no, I won't switch to Mac.

Ok, problem.
A few months ago Internet Explorer stopped working. I use Mozilla for web browsing so that's okay. However, some applications (such as a few online RPG games requiring login and software with "integrated web browsers") do not work, since they kind of embed an internet explorer page in the application or something. This is really annoying as makes these games unplayable and the software unuseable. Windows Update also works only in IE.

The symptoms:
When IE (6) loads, there is just a blank white screen. The home page URL doesn't appear in the address bar. No "connecting" text or anything appears in the status bar. Right clicking on the white screen brings up no menu or anything. The mouse cursor is just stuck on the egg-timer like it's loading. It stays like this forever until I hit stop. Typing in any URL etc appears to do nothing. I've tried installing IE7 to see if it helps, but I get the same problem, along with some graphical issues such as the background of the menu bars being distorted/transparent.

The weird thing is, if I type a URL into the address bar from "My Computer" or any other Windows Explorer window, the internet works fine. It is just Internet Explorer which doesnt seem to like it, and this is what the applications need unfortunately.

So far I have tried:
Reinstalling IE 6 & 7 numerous times, both from my XP CD and Wedsite Downloads
Reinstalling XP Service Pack 2
Editing the Registry manually according to Microsoft help sites to "Disable" Internet Explorer
Running Registry Mechanic
Running System Mechanic
Running Spybot S&D (and others)
Running Panda Antivirus (and others)
"Fixing" IE using various Start>Run methods with the XP CD inserted
Resetting all settings in the IE7 options
Deleting all Active X controls in the IE7 options
Disabling all other controls in the IE7 options

None of these fixed the problem, or even seemed to show any progress at all. I was going to email Microsoft but they want to charge me £35+VAT for each email. No thanks!

If anyone can suggest anything I haven't tried (other than reformatting my hard drive), or knows for sure how to solve the problem, I really would appreciate it! It's starting to drive me nuts!

Quit wasting your time playing games?

Sorry, I have no truly useful suggestions .. : (

Wow, you really have all your bases covered there it seems like. I would identify this as one of the "freak" problems that we sometimes encounter. A sure way to fix it is to back up all your things that need backing up (Get an external hardrive, it's a lifesaver, so when something like this happens again, you already have your stuff backed up!) Then proceed to format and reinstall your copy of WINDOWS XP!

Sorry, but that looks like what its comming down to if you really did all the things that you said you did.

Any chance you've accidently enabled the proxy settings? (Tools | Internet Options | Connections)

This has fixed similar problems for others... ((re)registers urlmon.dll)

Start > Run... > regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Do you have any Google 'extras' installed?

perform a System Restore all the way back to the weeks before your IE had problems, or better, Restore all the way before you installed IE7 - it could be buggy...

I believe this just embeds IE in a Firefox tab, but I could be wrong.

As far as the problem is concerned, system restore sounds like a good option. If you have a much earlier version of IE you may want to try installing that also.

Did you check your event log? Go Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Then under System Tools you should find your event viewer. View the 3 different logs and see if anything is there related to IE (or anything else) that may be causing your problem. You may want to clear the logs, reboot, and try IE again to try to isolate it if there is a lot in the logs.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. As far as proxy settings go, they are all disabled and the connections etc are all set up correctly. I've tried the IE tab for firefox, and encounter the same problem with that as I do with plain old IE. I did have the Google Taskbar installed but I proceeded to uninstall that, along with any other extras, using the interface for it in IE7. The "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" said it succeeded but the problem still remains. The problem was actually before I installed IE7, so it's not that which caused the problem. I only installed it hoping it would fix it, which it didn't. I'll try checking the logs now.

It appears your IE has gotten itself corrupted. Reinstalling IE should've done the trick, but you said it didn't. However I was wondering, when reinstalling IE, it usually gives you two options: 1 (default) is to only update the installation if you chose to add components and such, the second option is to completely reinstall all files from scratch. I'm wondering which of the two you chose.

You can also try HIjackThis. It's a small program that scans for every file that gets started with Windows and IE, every registry key that is changed from the norm and things like ip redirects. It also scans for BHO (Browser Helper Objects) that may be embedded invisibly in IE that stops it from functioning. Youi can download HijackThis from //www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Hope this helps

Good old IE! A marvel of programming genius! I had the auto-updates do it's thing and now whenever I run pages with Active X controls I have to click on them first to activate it! MS brought out a patch to fix it but now it's happened again with the latest update and the old patch doesn't fix it! Destroys my IE experience completely! It may be time to try a different browser!

have you tried maybe uninstalling firefox and Mozilla and seeing if you can get a clean install of IE working then reinstall firefox and Mozilla? That is unless IE has always worked in the past and just recently kicked the bucket. Just a thought.

What I would do:

+ Uninstall both IE and Firefox. Now, there's a trick to uninstall IE the correct way, without leaving anything behind. Do a search on google and you'll find tutorials and tutorials explaining this procedure. Make sure you do that. (before you do that, though, make sure you have all the software downloaded for the next parts)

+ Uninstall anything else that is not totally useful (the reason is you want your computer very clean for this process)
+ Run Spybot
+ Run Hijackthis (this is not an easy program, but from your post I assume you are pretty advanced in computer repair).
+ Run AceUtilities (Awesome program! Fixed misterious problems on my computer, plus makes it run smooth and clean again)
+ Install IE

This should do the trick. If not, format it.
:)

I have to second this one! Quit wasting your time and chasing your tail, backup your personal stuff and reinstall. Then set a good restore point. Sometimes with all the "extras" that get downloaded (like the toolbars and search engines - they are the worst), other unwanted files are also dumped to your machine and are so imbedded that you end up fixing and refixing only to have the problem come back within a few uses. Thats what really causes the problem, not a freaky install of windows. Music sites are also a BIG no-no in my house. Not too many I truse and NEVER download it!
